The United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need. We are currently seeking to fill two Supply Chain Interns to support with enhancing evidence, reporting and overall visibility of Supply Chain work in improving markets and working with local supply chain team’s work key information . The work may include direct interactions to WFP Country Offices, and particularly the data pipeline of market intelligence, market assessment and performance evaluation portfolios in the Logistics Retail and Markets Team of the Supply Chain Division (SCOLR), based in Rome, Italy.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION:

In 2022, WFP delivered a record-high US $3.3 billion in Cash-Based Transfers (CBT) in 67 countries – representing 37 percent of its total portfolio, and up from US $10 million in ten countries in 2009. In the past decade, the number of beneficiaries receiving a form of cash-based assistance is growing rapidly, even multiplying. It is an evolving time for humanitarian assistance.

The SC Retail & Markets Unit (SCOLR), supports the development of sustainable markets, required to achieve zero hunger. A significant amount of materials (data, guidance, dashboard, etc.) is generated from WFP’s market-based operations which can be used to understand, monitor and improve not only the operations themselves but also the markets impact. SCOLR also aims at assuring that such essential data are effectively shared and communicated, within WFP and its partners, to inform on the efficiency and impact of WFP’s work in rendering sustainable local markets and supply chains.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with the preparation of documents relevant to meetings, workshops or other events
  • Assist the collection of critical information or documentations from Country Offices and Regional Bureaus to be analysed, synthesized and presented to management for reporting key indicators or show-casing achievements and contribution of WFP supply chain interventions to the improvement of national food systems
  • Assist with market desk research using secondary data to understand the context, the market system and factors impacting demand and supply
  • Assist in the unit’s knowledge management and work with the team and content owners to define priorities for content creation and the publishing of content
  • Assist in the update and publishing of key resource documents and procedures (i.e. manuals, guidelines, standard operating procedures, training materials et al.)
  • Draft various communications, reports, and status updates
  • Perform other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Preferred area of study: Business management & marketing, Supply Chain or related studies
  • Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate or graduate studies completed, or recently graduated (within the past six months)
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Professional/ Working command of MS Office package (word, excel, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Ability to rapidly synthesize information and produce high-quality written materials (reports, presentations, graphs etc.)
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a certain degree of autonomy
  • Detail oriented, with strong critical thinking abilities, creativity and problem-solving mindset
  • Ability to think, plan, and execute on multiple projects simultaneously in an organized and proactive way
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, ability to work as part of a multicultural team and environment with staff members of different nationalities and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to learn technology quickly through instructions and self-training

WORKING LANGUAGES

Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C). Fluency in written and oral communication in another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of SCOLR Supply Chain Officer, and in close consultation with other functions, the staff will assist SCOLR’s compilation and presentation of operational information, key performance indicators, essential business progress reports as well as visibility materials used for wider communication and advocacy with various stakeholders, internally and external to the organization

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Become familiar with WFP organization mandate and mission and get exposure on the environment for working in a multicultural humanitarian agency of the United Nations
  • Gain hands-on experience on WFP’s core business activities (market and supply chain assessments, vendor selection and contracting, monitoring activities etc.) for the design, set up and evaluation of humanitarian interventions and to assure the efficient provision of assistance to targeted populations
  • Participate and expand skills in coordinating multi- stakeholders activities, analyze and present operational data to support business advocacy, management decision making and strategy setting

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognise candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
