WFP focuses on the prevention of malnutrition, the building of resilience and the integration of nutrition concerns and gender equality throughout the portfolio.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Advanced University degree in Public Health Nutrition, Nutrition, Food Technology, Medicine or other relevant field.

Languages:

  • Fluency in both oral and written English

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

This job is based in the Afar Regional State, Semera Sub-Office. The job holder will report to a senior Programme and Policy Officer. Afar Region is faced with various recurrent and protracted crises such as drought, flood, desert locust and armed conflict. Wasting and stunting have skyrocketed as livelihoods have been eroded by the crises. Households have limited resources in terms of resilience, food-security (nutrient-dense availability, access and also demand), high cost of healthy diets, high levels of non-affordability of nutritious diets, limited access and existence of quality health and nutrition services.

JOB PURPOSE

The job holder will be working under the close support and guidance of a more experienced professional staff member receiving guidance and regular feedback on work performed. He/she will focus on nutrition-related interventions, both nutrition sensitive and nutrition in specific. He/she will provide support to nutrition programmes and activities to contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of WFP beneficiaries both in the livelihood support intervention and emergency response activities.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  1. Contribute to the development of nutrition projects and activities, plans and processes, ensuring alignment with wider nutrition policies and guidance.
  2. Provide project management support to specific and defined nutrition projects and activities, ensuring a co-ordinated approach with wider programmes/projects that complies with WFP standards and procedures.
  3. Develop and co-ordinate data gathering and monitoring/assessment systems ensuring that rigorous quality standards are maintained.
  4. Track and analyse data to provide input into reporting activities and contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reporting on nutrition activities that enables informed decision making and consistency of information presented to stakeholders.
  5. Liaise with implementing partners (internal and external) to monitor ongoing projects, ensuring effective collaboration, timeliness and efficiency, and highlight potential risks to project delivery.
  6. Support the identification of potential partners and partnership negotiations to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach to meeting nutrition needs.
  7. Support the capacity building of WFP staff, partners and national government to prepare for and respond to nutrition needs for example the production and review of training materials.
  8. Guide more junior staff, acting as a point of referral and supporting them with more complex analysis and queries.
  9. Act in an assigned emergency response capacity as required to meet emergency food assistance needs
  10. Perform any other duties as assigned.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

Experience:

At least Five years’ experience and exposure to implementation of national/international development programmes. Experience working in public health/food security/ nutrition related activities. Experience identifying and defining nutrition issues/problems within a country.

Skills:

  • Ability to work independently in a timely and organized manner.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to explore and experiment with new ideas and approaches in own work.
  • Ability to work in a team and multi-task as needed.
  • A strong understanding of nutrition issues
  • Strong coordination and oversight skills
