ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The hunger crisis in Afghanistan is unfolding at a rapidly, with over half the country’s population of 40 million now facing acute food insecurity—the highest number the humanitarian community has ever seen in Afghanistan. Work opportunities are shrinking, with most households now reporting just one day of work per week. This comes on top of the worst drought in years, which is especially concerning for the 85 percent of the population who rely on agriculture for livelihoods.

Preventing and mitigating a drastic increase in hunger and malnutrition is the aim of WFP in Afghanistan which can only be achieved through the scaled up and sustained complementary food security and nutrition interventions, combined with a scale-up of resilience interventions to safeguard gains. WFP has embarked on a significant month on month scale-up of its crisis response and resilience programmes across the country, ensuring that the programme is delivered at the right scale and time, targeted to the right areas. WFP is also actively following up on evolving trends to pre-empt hotspots, while guaranteeing quality and maximum impact of the programme through the monitoring of these hotspots to be able to support continued donor advocacy.

The communications unit leads WFP Afghanistan’s public advocacy for sustained support for the girls, boys, women and men in need of food assistance and is the organization’s key interface with national and international media. The unit produces content for social media and our donors that showcases the work of WFP in Afghanistan and supports other unit and area offices in all questions and needs regarding communications.

This position requires someone with a good understanding of the media, political, ethnic and security context in the country. The candidate will need to learn about and understand WFP’s different programmes in Afghanistan, create compelling stories about WFP’s work, the impact on families and communities and demonstrate success for our donors and external partners.

JOB PURPOSE

To implement the communications plan by supporting and delivering a range of communications activities, providing research and analysis, and prioritising effectively.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

  • Serve as the lead editorial writer for WFP communications in Afghanistan.
    Contribute to communications through good research and lead on case studies and ensuring we map with rigor communications deliverables for our donors in WFP CO Afghanistan.
    Gather content (photo, video, quotes, interviews) in the field.
    Work closely and independently with partnership unit to fulfill contractual donor visibility requirements, understand programming and inter-linkages, plan coverage and track progress to enhance visibility and reputation of WFP, as well as support fundraising activities, ensuring alignment with overall communications and WFP strategies.
    Support communications activities that enable informed decision making and ensures consistency of information presented to the media and other stakeholders.
    Lead on localization and update of global templates for food packaging and ensure quality control, working closely with Supply Chain.
    Organize media visits and brief journalists on location.
    Support capacity building of WFP staff on all aspects of communication, provides advice and
    guidance within area and level of expertise, in order to ensure that all activities meet desired

    standards of consistency, quality and impact. For example, the design and review of training materials.

    Any other duties as required.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations or other relevant field.

Experience: Three years or more relevant professional experience in journalism, media production, social networking, content creation and/or writing.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • Must work well independently and within a team structure, pro-active and engaged.
  • Self-taught learner willing to read and keep up to date on technological changes.
  • Excellent working knowledge of major social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
  • Excellent working knowledge of a range of digital design and editing software for both PC and iOS.
  • Excellent hands-on knowledge of live event content curation and multimedia content creation.
  • Experience and demonstrable portfolio of digital visual asset creation.
  • Proven track record of social media channel messaging in management for a large international non-profit organization.
  • Ability to train teams and explain complicated concepts across a range of cultures and geographies to a diverse audience.
  • Proactive and highly organised, with strong time management and planning skills.
  • Able to meet tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure.

Language:

Fluency (level C) in English language, plus Pashto and/or Dari, preferably both.
