BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian agency, saving lives in emergencies and changing lives for millions through sustainable development. WFP works in more than 120 countries and territories around the world, feeding people caught in conflict and disasters, and laying the foundations for a better future.
The production of stories and editorial content is a key component to efforts to position WFP vis-à-vis key external audiences, including, but not limited to, donors.
Reporting to the Head of the Editorial team in CAM, the Senior Writer will be responsible for producing relevant, high-quality content that highlights WFP’s added value and resonates with the news agenda, key dates and relevant off- and online conversations.
ACCOUNTABITLITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for researching and writing engaging news stories, short-form features, interviews, listicles, how-tos, comment pieces and other content for the corporate website and other platforms as required;
- Accountable for editing copy swiftly and with a high level of accuracy, including meticulous factchecking;
- Manage relationships with key stakeholders, including senior WFP leadership, and contributors from a variety of backgrounds in WFP’s country offices, regional bureaus and divisions;
- Strategically guide content production by consolidating and analyzing data about trends and audiences;
- Responsible for researching and uploading photos as well as writing informative and relevant picture captions;
- Implement and review web content to ensure it is highly Search Engine Optimized (SEO);
- Identify and execute on in-bound marketing strategy opportunities, such as content placement on external platforms;
- Other editorial tasks as required.
DELIVERABLES:
- Creation and curation of a body of content to raise the awareness of WFP and amplify advocacy, outreach and fundraising with key strategic audiences;
- Up-to-date content on www.wfp.org that adheres to corporate narrative and is aligned with the news agenda and relevant conversations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education: |
Advanced University degree in English, English Literature, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, International Relations or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses. |
Experience: |
At least eight years of post-graduate professional experience in writing for the media and online content production. |
Knowledge & Skills: |

Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (level C) is required. An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is a plus.
