About the Project:
Fortification of staples and condiments has historically had a disproportionate focus on large scale food businesses. However, only a small proportion of food is processed in large mills with the mandate and technology to fortify their flour. The majority of consumers in East Africa and Asia, from 50% to as high as 95% in some countries, consume milled staples processed by thousands of small mills across the region. In order to increase fortification among smaller food businesses we need to develop a strategy to build a cost-neutralizing business model to address the main barriers to small scale fortification, allowing for rapid uptake by mills that serve consumers not reached by large-scale fortification.
