BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest provider of humanitarian food assistance. On average, WFP reaches more than 80 million people with food assistance in 82 countries each year Around 14,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor.

ShareTheMeal is developed as the first pilot project of the WFP Innovation Accelerator, part of the Innovation and Knowledge Management Division, which aims to combine start-up lean thinking with non-profit projects to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. This division reports to the Chief of Staff of WFP and seeks to create value through prioritizing and better harnessing innovative ideas, as well as scaling up transformative projects to a global level.

The ShareTheMeal app was launched in 2015 and currently has more than one million users. The team, located in Berlin, is focused on growing the user base and increasing engagement of existing users through marketing and communication initiatives as well as further developing the app to include new and innovative features.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Consultant, reporting to the Head of Engineering for the ShareTheMeal initiative, is expected to:

1. Manage the Android Team
   1. Facilitate technical decision-making, and ensure final decisions are taken
   2. Identify inefficiencies, continuously improve working processes within the team
   3. Conduct agile processes and ensure faster iterations by removing impediments
   4. Provide mentorship and regular feedback sessions with the Android team
   5. Contribute to the improvement of the team’s engagement metrics
   6. Hold regular 1:1's with all members of the Android team
   7. Drive hiring of key positions and growth of the team.
   8. Facilitate creation of a technical roadmap.
   9. Draft KPIs and SLOs.
   10. Draft project plans for epics
2. Design and maintain scalable architecture of all Android platform(s).
3. Identify and plan reduction of technical debt in the system and creation of technical capital.
4. Research, plan and facilitate the improvement of product quality, security, and performance.
   1. Design, implement and maintain native Android solutions for ShareTheMeal using Kotlin
   2. Conduct code reviews and assessments
5. Document architecture/code decisions and APIs
6. Mentor Junior Engineers with clear goals and learning path.
7. Other activities
   1. Act as facilitator to staff on developing the organization
   2. Assist the management of the ShareTheMeal initiative with other activities as required

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

• Completed contributions to the application, architecture and infrastructure.
• Documentation and handover to Head of Engineering for ShareTheMeal

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:	Bachelor’s degree or technical training in computer science or related field
Experience:	At least 5 years of experience in developing and designing Android native apps designed to serve thousands or more concurrently active users.
Knowledge & Skills:	Expert knowledge of Kotlin development Advanced knowledge of native Android user interface design implementation Embracing principles of clean code, test driven development, clean architecture and agile development processes In depth knowledge of Unit and UI testing User-centred approach to software development Strong analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative Ability to interact with managers with maturity and tact Mature judgment with strong interpersonal skills Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the World Food Programme
Languages:	In addition to a high proficiency in written and spoken English, knowledge of a second UN language is a plus
