SUMMARY
The Director of Communications will report to the Vice President of Administration and is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive and dynamic external communications strategy for the university. The Director serves as the creative architect for all external communications, manages the communications team’s work — including the website implementation team — and sits on the marketing team. The director is responsible for capturing campus life — and its stories – through various media including print, digital, and video.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
– Communication/Content Generation
– Develop an external communications plan for the University to tell the AIU story through all media channels
– Manage AIU’s external print and electronic communications
– Web content (AIU Review-Blogs)
– Press releases and media pitches (including key talking points when appropriate)
– Email (emails from the CEO or Director of Operations-all other internal emails to be written by department leaders)
– Manage American International University Review (AIU Review )
– Hold regular meetings with the school’s academic leadership to gather content
– work with the schools to promote interest and gather content
– Manage all submissions by editing, formatting, gathering quotes and photos
– Manage relationships with local press
– Continually keep a finger on the pulse of what’s happening on the campus — and create media — both video and print
– Oversee daily communications meetings to identify stories, create assignments, and manage content
– Serve as editor-in-chief of the AIU Blog
– Work with the Admissions Director and Vice President of Academic Affairs to develop a “Yearbook ”.
– Stay current on programs, positioning and marketing, and communication strategies developed by peer schools
– Develop and publish a quarterly AIU magazine – branding and content to be developed
– Media & Advertising
– Develop and execute media plans including traditional, social, and digital media
– Work with the Director of Marketing to develop an annual advertising campaign
– Manage Communications budget
– Continue to explore new media opportunities
– Photography/Video
– Oversee all AIU promotional videos
– Write content for and direct videos
– Work collaboratively with the graphic designers to edit videos
– Work with the Marketing Director to have videos posted to social media
– Academic Lectures and Guest Speakers (AIU Academic Lectures Series)
– Work with the Vice President of Academic Affairs to promote the university by hosting guest lectures as part of the “AIU Academic Lectures Series”
– Organize with the Deans and faculty to hold lectures for students and faculty
– Provide written reviews and video/photography for all visiting lecturers to appear in media print and AIU website
– Work with the Director of Marketing to advertise lectures across campus
Communications Director
Goals for the first year:
– Develop AIU Quarterly Magazine
– Develop AIU Academic Lecture Series
– Grow AIU Review
– Expand AIU Promotional Videos
– Expand and grow AIU Blogs
– Create and develop an AIU Yearbook
– Develop a training series to ensure all departments can write their own internal communications
– Onboard a Communications Specialist and Public Relations Coordinator to help facilitate the goals of the Communications Department
– Work with the Graphic Design Team to brand all external media; (Blogs, AIU Review, Yearbook, Magazine)
Communications Department will not:
Write communications for the internal purpose for other departments including emails, schedules, agendas, or any Marketing related text.
Cover small scale Student Engagement activities- this will fall under Marketing for social media purposes (The Communications Department will cover both small- and large-scale events for PR purposes, AIU Yearbook, and AIU Magazine as the department sees fit
* Manage Social Media (this will stay with Marketing) Content will be given to Marketing to use
Experience and Education:
– Bachelor's degree in Business Management or any related course in Communications, Marketing, Business.
– At least 2 years of experience in the same capacity
About American International University:
AIU is a newer institution of higher education in Kuwait with the first student cohort admitted in fall 2019. It is a private, co-educational institution offering undergraduate degrees based on the American model of higher education. Through its educational programs, the College serves the intellectual, cultural, and personal growth of all members of its community. AIU offers degree programs in Engineering, Architecture, and Design, and Business Administration where the language of instruction is English.
