JOB SUMMARY

The Pathology Clinical Manager – Genetic Pathology is part of a team of Biomedical Scientists/Technologists delivering high quality services and has operational oversight within the department. S/he is the professional lead in their area responsible for providing expert advice to service users. The Pathology Clinical Manager – Genetic Pathology has overall responsibility for the management of their department’s resources including equipment, communication, education, training and development of staff (including his/her own professional development), Health and Safety and Quality. The Pathology Clinical Manager – Genetic Pathology also plays a significant role in assisting in technology development and in analyzing clinical genetic data and reporting clinical genetic findings.

KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Responsible for the direct management, supervision and operations in the Genetic Pathology laboratory.
  • Collaborates with the Chair – Pathology to measure, assess, and improve performance of all sections.
  • Ensures a high level of customer satisfaction and all relevant organizational policies /procedures are followed.
  • Oversees quality control of data entry, sample receipt, processing, testing and reporting, along with, routine equipment maintenance.
  • Undertakes, in collaboration with laboratory staff, the development and implementation of appropriate technologies to improve the genetic diagnostic service at Sidra Medicine.
  • Undertakes the analysis of clinical genetic data and the formal reporting of clinical genetic results.
  • Provides professional, scientific and fiscal management for Pathology Sciences.
  • Develops and oversees the department operations through written policies, procedures, implementing analytical processes and ensuring departmental operational and strategic goals are managed efficiently.
  • Maintains medical laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards, troubleshooting procedures and ensuring staff remains in compliance.
  • Manages and maintains department supply inventory by verifying stock, anticipating needed supplies and placing orders for supplies.
  • Maintains department productivity by monitoring workload of all areas and recommending staff adjustments, additions or shift changes to streamline workflow.
  • Analyzes and recommends improvement in establishing workflow priorities, employee competency testing, training and writing procedures.
  • Delegation of duties and monitoring of delegated duties.
  • Routine daily in-lab problem solving. Keeps the Chair – Pathology informed of personnel or procedural issues.
  • Manages and monitors department staff by recruiting, selecting and training employees.
  • Responsible for counseling and disciplining staff and providing performance appraisals.
  • Resolves complex problems by maintaining strong lines of communication with the Chair – Pathology, Division Chief, Client Services Manager and pathologists.
  • Works with the Quality Manager to develop systems to deliver quality services that satisfy CAP, ISO15189 and JCI standards.
  • Actively participates in the analytical work of the Genetic Pathology Division, including analyzing and checking complex results and the preparation of a wide range of clinical reports.
  • Involved in complex analytical procedures, as required, and oversees the implementation of processes to enhance those procedures.
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of complex software for the analysis of clinical genomic samples.

ESSENTIAL

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Science/Pathology Technologist with HPC/MT or FIBMS

Experience

  • 5+ years of progressive management experience in an Academic Institution in Molecular Diagnostics
  • Experience in evaluating and commissioning new equipment and technologies
  • Experience in test validations, as well as analyzing genetic data and the reporting of findings
  • CAP or ISO accreditation experience

Certification and Licensure

Holds current license to practice in country of origin including MT (USA) + specialty (ASCP) or equivalent

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ISO 15189/ CAP/JCI standards and guidelines
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and implement hospital directives and policies as appropriate
  • Demonstrated experience and skill in evaluating new technologies
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
