The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an Innovation, Change and Knowledge Management (INK) division intern position based in Rome, Italy or home-based.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION
WFP’s Innovation, Change and Knowledge Management (INK) division was created in 2015 and recently given the corporate mandate to strengthen Knowledge Management (KM) across the organisation at a global, regional, and country level. KM is a way of working that values knowledge as an organisational asset, and WFP’s vision for KM is to create, access, retain and share knowledge internally and externally to achieve zero hunger. Effective KM will allow WFP to maximise the impact of every dollar by learning from more than 60 years of experience in the field, building on the successes of those who came before us, and avoiding duplication of work and repeating costly mistakes.
By enabling staff knowledge to be shared widely, WFP will become more effective, innovative, and cost-effective. As such, INK is actively expanding its corporate KM Team to help move forward its KM Strategy and KM Action Plan.
GENERAL INFORMATION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Knowledge Management Lead in implementing the KM Action Plan
- Support the development of KM guidance and tools for the corporate Knowledge Management Toolkit
- Support with Knowledge Management in person and virtual events
- Support with the implementation of the KM communication plan
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university;
- University course attendance in the past 12 months.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Knowledge of Knowledge Management approaches and practices
- Knowledge of Change Management approaches and practices is a plus
- Prior relevant work experience is a plus
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Digitally savvy
- Experience with Office 365 is a plus
- Analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative is a plus
- Collaborative spirit to liaise with a wide range of people at various levels and across different cultures
- Time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles
- Self-motivated and able to work in teams
- Committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.
WORKING LANGUAGES
Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C). Knowledge of second UN language is a plus.
SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)
Under the direct supervision of Knowledge Management Lead within the INK Division.
TRAINING COMPONENTS
Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.
LEARNING ELEMENTS
At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:
- Have a strong/stronger understanding of Knowledge Management both as a discipline and within the UN system
- Have gained hands-on experience working on KM projects with different teams
- Ensure that all work and materials developed during the contract are well documented and available to the WFP team.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
- WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
- WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
- Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
