Protection Coordinator – Livelihoods Project

ABOUT RI: Relief International specializes in relief and development programs that benefit people in acute distress. The people that we serve live in seventeen countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia where the debilitating effects of political instability, forced displacement, and natural disasters are pervasive. Often, RI is the only organization providing healthcare, education, logistics, energy, capacity building, economic development, sanitation, and many other forms of assistance to these highly vulnerable communities.

Position Summary:

The Protection Coordinator has overall responsibility for overseeing the design, quality, and implementation of all Protection activities in line with Global Protection and RI quality standards.

The Protection Coordinator will be responsible for providing technical supervision to 4 Family Mentors, who provide weekly mentorship support to households engaged in the Graduation Approach, and the Community Mobilisers, who will support training the Graduation Mentors and providing group sessions for beneficiaries. These Mentors are responsible for providing one-to-one coaching and mentorship for vulnerable households to reinforce positive behaviors, address psychosocial needs, and develop the youth and their households’ self-reliance capabilities. The Protection Coordinator is responsible for providing technical assistance, overseeing the quality of the mentors’ work, and supporting in their ongoing training and capacity building. The Protection Coordinator is also responsible for providing technical support and capacity building to the Livelihoods Mentors, employed under the same project, on communication skills, referrals, and other protection topics, as required.

The Protection Coordinator is responsible for developing and delivering group workshops for households engaged in the Graduation Approach on a range of topics, with a focus on behavioral change, including increasing gender awareness and conflict resolution (at a household level). The Protection Coordinator based in Amman, with frequent travel to the two bases where the program is implemented (Zaatari and Azaraq Camps)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES And RESPONSIBILITIES:

The individual will report directly to the Livelihoods Specialist. Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Provide technical supervision to 4 Family Mentors on two bases (Zatari and Azraq).
  • Provide technical support and capacity building for the 4 Livelihood Mesntors on protection topics and soft skills (such as successful communication).
  • Provide technical supervision to the Camp Officers, who will support in the training of Graduation Mentors, and in the provision of group sessions for beneficiaries.
  • Provide on-going coaching to the Family Mentors, alongside the development and delivery of trainings relevant to the mentors’ professional development and the successful delivery of the Gradation Approach.
  • Develop a training plan for all Family Mentors in liaison with colleagues in the MEAL Technical Unit and RSO and GSO Technical Units
  • Develop activity and work plans for the Family Mentors, in collaboration with the Livelihoods Specialist.
  • Provide technical advice to the project team on any protection concerns that are identified during engagement with beneficiaries.
  • Develop and deliver workshops and trainings for households engaged in the Graduation Approach on a range of topics, with a focus on behavioural change (including gender awareness, confidence building, and conflict resolution).
  • Support the Camp Officers in preparing procurement plans for protection activities conducted as part of the programme, following the budget and work plan for the base.
  • Work closely with the Livelihoods Specialists to ensure effective integration of protection and livelihoods programming, a core element of the Graduation Approach. This includes ensuring an up-to-date integrated referral pathway for each location.
  • Ensure key protection and gender standards are being mainstreamed throughout all project activities.
  • Coordinate with the MEAL department to ensure M&E tools for the project protection activities are being effectively implemented, and provide guidance to the Graduation Mentors on carrying out M&E activities. Conduct regular spot checks of the Family Mentors’ activities, as well as the protection components delivered by the Livelihoods Mentors, ensuring quality and effective implementation of the project activities at each base.
  • Represent RI at field level technical coordination meetings, as required.

Safeguarding and conduct

  • Uphold and promote RI’s commitment to ensuring the safeguarding and safety of the vulnerable communities we serve.
  • Consistent with RI’s safeguarding and protection policies, contribute to ensuring that all those who come into contact with Relief International staff and the communities we serve can be trusted to work safely with them
  • Support and develop systems that create and maintain an environment that prevents sexual exploitation and abuse and promotes the implementation of the Code of Conduct and safeguarding policies.
  • Work collaboratively with the Global Safeguarding Manager to advocate for the inclusion of safeguarding activities and resources within program
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of donor requirements of safeguarding standards and protection from exploitation and abuse

Qualifications and Requirements:

Masters degree in social science, social work or psychology

  • At least five years of experience in the protection sectors, including extensive experience implementing and overseeing protection programs and the direct provision of protection services, including awareness raising on a range of protection topics and group counselling to vulnerable groups; experience working with refugees a plus
  • Experience in a technical supervisory role is desirable.
  • Proven experience and successful track record overseeing protection programs.
  • Experience providing counseling or case management services is an advantage.
  • Proven experience providing technical support to protection staff
  • Knowledge of employment challenges in Jordan including barriers to employment for women and youth.
  • Experience with youth-based programming, especially with vulnerable youth including refugee youth a plus.
  • Proven experience developing and delivering trainings to a range of audiences on protection topics.
  • Commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures
  • Full professional proficiency in Arabic and English**
  • Good English writing skills and ability to communicate technical information in an easy to understand, informative and collaborative manner
  • High integrity and willingness to conduct her/himself transparently and open to scrutiny
  • Availability to travel within Jordan, including overnight trips
