INSO is looking for a GIS Officer
INSO is an international non-governmental, non-profit organisation. Our mission is to support the humanitarian community with information, analysis, and advice that enhances situational awareness, supports informed decision-making, strengthens operational practice, and enables humanitarian access.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the INSO Information Manager, the successful candidate will be focused on meeting the mapping and spatial analysis needs within INSO, as well as providing IT support to the teams.
The GIS Officer position is a highly rewarding role, offering a unique opportunity to work with a team giving support in relation to the provision of safety services to the NGO community. The successful candidate must have a professional working proficiency in Arabic and English (reading, writing, and speaking).
Key Duties
- Identify map needs in collaboration with the Information Team and the Programme Team.
- Identify obstacles related to the collection, analysis, and dissemination of information and develop appropriate improvement strategies.
- Produce and maintain high-quality, security-relevant static- and web maps, including security incident mapping; area of influence mapping; Reference maps; and other data visualization.
- Provide GIS-relevant inputs on field missions intended to gather data for INSO outputs, including maps.
- Ensure INSO’s spatial data is well-organized and kept up to date in a constantly evolving context.
- Work closely with the Information Officer to ensure accurate and regularly updated linkages between GIS maps and INSO’s Incident Database.
- Collaborate and support the information team on the migration and operation of the INSO’s Incident Database system.
- Support in producing other visuals like graphics, flowcharts, etc.
- Provide training on GIS mapping software and methods.
- Understand the ongoing events and the security environment of Syria.
- Provide IT support for INSO Syria offices.
- Support the information team in collecting and managing the Monthly Operation Statistics for the programme team.
- Support the information team in managing the monthly roundtable meetings.
- Any other tasks assigned by the Information Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Geography, GIS, or a relevant discipline.
- Minimum two years of GIS work experience, preferably with an NGO, with demonstrable experience in high-quality map production.
- Excellent command of ArcGIS Pro and QGIS software
- Excellent command of Microsoft Office 365, including PowerBI.
- Fluency in English and Arabic language, both written and verbal.
- Be systematic, proactive, innovative, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
- Excellent skills with data collection and analysis.
- Familiar with Microsoft Publisher and InDesign is recommended.
- Familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud including Photoshop and Illustrator
- Familiar with basic scripting language. Familiarity with Python coding is desired to be incorporated with ArcGIS Pro model builder and/or Arcpy.
- Understanding and working experience in the Syrian context is desired.
