ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
These jobs are found in Headquarters (HQ). Job holders report to the Division or the designate, and work under the functional supervision of the Director, Information Technology (IT).
Job holders work with minimal supervision, and provide guidance to junior staff to ensure that objectives are achieved. They work individually or within a team developing innovative IT solutions and maintaining systems and applications.
JOB PURPOSE
The purpose of the job of API Specialist is to support the evolution of the different integration patterns being synchronous, asynchronous, and event-based to best support the need of the Organization to have an enterprise-grade, solid, loosely coupled, and well-encapsulated IT ecosystem.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
- Develop and deploy IT systems aligned with business needs ensuring compliance with WFP IT policies and procedures and overall information management strategy.
- Write detailed technical specifications for developed applications ensuring traceability back to source requirements. Develop and maintain technical documentation for quality, accuracy and comprehensive coverage of functionality.
- Create test plans and perform testing for quality, accuracy and comprehensive coverage of program code.
- Install, configure and customize IT systems, integrate and migrate data between systems ensuring compliance with WFP’s IT standards, guidelines and procedures.
- Guide junior IT solutions development staff to ensure continuous development and promote high performance.
- Follow the entire release process providing early life support managing incoming change, maintenance and support requests in order to prepare for and enable proper use of the IT solutions.
- Provide support to users, analyse and resolve issues and enhance IT systems following IT policies, procedures and standards.
- Deliver training on existing and new IT functionalities and provide continuous user support for capacity building.
- Contribute to technical specifications supporting the procurement of IT products and services following WFP rules and regulations.
- Collate and analyse data to contribute to the preparation of accurate reports on IT activities, investments and costs, identifying ideas to increase cost-efficiencies where possible.
- Collaborate in the design and architecture of the corporate WFP API ecosystem.
- Collaborate in the design, architecture, and implementation of the corporate Enterprise Event Bus.
- Work on the evolution of the different integration patterns available in the Organization (synchronous, asynchronous, and event-based).
- Collaborate in identify the best way to implement Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) and interoperability approaches in the WFP ecosystem.
- Coordinate and supervise the API specialists (internal and vendors) working in the Digital Core team.
- Liaise with different units and teams (within or outside TEC) to shape a trustworthy and professional API landscape.
- Work with IT Security on how to review, monitor, and control the different integration points implemented in the organization through a professionally designed and operated observability layer.
- Guide WFP development teams on how to design and implement their integration interfaces to best deliver value for the Organization.
- Embrace a full cloud-native, pipeline-based approach and ensure the high technical quality of designed IT solutions and compliance with WFP standards (architecture, security, technology stack, etc.).
- Constantly look for new ways to optimize the Digital Core components in terms of costs, resiliency, scalability, and response times.
- Foster a healthy community of developers, architects, and solutions designers where information can be exchanged advantageously and transparently.
- Contribute and inspire a team environment with an open communication culture.
- Write detailed technical specifications for the API ecosystem. Develop and maintain technical documentation for quality, accuracy, and comprehensive coverage of functionality.
- Provide support to developers and product owners in the consumption of corporate APIs, analyze and resolve issues and enhance the accessibility of the API Gateway and its adherence to industry standards.
QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Advanced university degree in Computer Science, engineering or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience or trainings/courses.
Experience:
- A minimum of three (3) years of relevant progressively responsible postgraduate experience in managing and architecting enterprise IT.
Language:
- Fluency (level C) in English language.
- Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese (a WFP’s working language).

- Has collated data and prepared reports on IT/TC investment and costs in order to facilitate decision-making by stakeholders.
- Has supervised and provided guidance to support staff.
- At least 2 years of working experience in managing API ecosystems.
- At least 2 years of international, multicultural, working experience.
- Solid and proven experience in REST APIs design, mediation, and monitoring.
- Experience in creating and dealing with OpenAPI specification files.
- Experience with the AsynchAPI standard.
- Solid experience in managing complex AWS environments.
- Experience in designing and mediating SOA/Microservices architectures.
- Has supervised developers in the implementation of API-based integrations.

- Mobility is and continues to be, a core contractual requirement in WFP. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed term as well as a rotational contract with a probationary period of one year.
