About INTERSOS:
INTERSOS is an Italian humanitarian organization that works all over the world bringing assistance to people in danger, including victims of natural disasters and armed conflicts. We intervene to effectively meet the needs of people in crisis, with particular attention to vulnerable groups, women and children. We provide primary assistance in terms of food, shelter, medical assistance and basic goods, while also ensuring that basic needs, education, safe water and health needs are met during the recovery phase.
Since 2012, INTERSOS has had operations in the Middle East to contribute towards ensuring emergency relief and social protection assistance for Syrian refugees fleeing their home in search of safety, with special focus on most vulnerable groups (children, women, elderly and persons with special needs).
In Jordan, INTERSOS has focused its humanitarian response on supporting Syrian families displaced across urban and rural areas, as well as vulnerable host communities, with a programme that concentrates on protection
Purpose/objective of the position:
The “Community Mobilizer” is responsible for establishing relationships with communities in the areas of intervention based on trust and cooperation, will also motivate and mobilize the communities for assisting communities to learn to self-manage community investments. S/he will aim at strengthening existing community resources, increasing community protection capacities and facilitating a continuous two-way communication between INTERSOS and communities.
Generic Duties:
- Strengthen the quality and effectiveness of services and activities provided by INTERSOS paying particular attention to social aspects in the communities and to possible issues of exclusion;
- Support the protection team in understanding the needs of different community groups and
- ensuring equal and meaningful access to services and activities;
- Organize and facilitate participatory and community-based protection activities such as community risk mapping, community-led initiatives, community action plans and peer-to-peer support groups;
- Conduct regular focus group discussions (FGDs) to better understand community perspectives and assist in the development of a community-driven agenda proposing new activities and services;
- Conduct community-based awareness sessions and campaigns to inform community members on various topics related to identified knowledge gaps and concerns;
- Assess the capacity and potential of the community to establish a community-based protection support system (committees) in order to identify and timely address potential protection risks;
- Actively identify, document and refer individuals with specific needs and/or protection concerns;
- Conduct visits to vulnerable individuals with limited mobility, assess their needs and report accordingly to the Case Worker;
- Provide orientation on available services and how to access them as well as on-going activities across the project area;
- Write regular reports on the overall protection situation in the communities based on data and information collected;
- Liaise with local stakeholders, government bodies, specialized agencies and service providers in order to strengthen synergies amongst each other;
- Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles including but not limited to: do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality and accountability and need-to-know principles.
Specific Duties:
- Carry out community mobilization and assist the team in capacity building activities with community members;
- Ensure non-partisan, culturally and socially to advise the team in appropriate implementation of project;
- Contribute to feasibility studies, surveys and need assessments;
- Establish new contacts with communities as well as revive old ones where INTERSOS has been working;
- Conduct community committees’ trainings, field visits, training sessions, campaigns, meetings with local leaders and women’s groups;
- Seek to create constructive working environment for community participants and field team, and encourage, facilitate, and mediate nonviolent conflict resolution and problem solving.
- S/he will perform any other tasks requested by the Supervisor in the framework of the activities foreseen by INTERSOS program in Jordan.
Other Responsibilities:
- Uphold the INTERSOS Code of Conduct and policies;
- Ensure the respect of the core humanitarian principles: neutrality, impartiality, independence and humanity and the respect of the “do no harm” principle of humanitarian action.
- Strictly follow the internal procedures, policies (PSEA, CPP etc.) and guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Minimum requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in social studies, humanitarian actions or any related field;
- ideally at least 1 year of professional experience as social worker and/or community mobilizer preferably in the NGO and humanitarian sector;
- Extensive field experience and an in–depth knowledge of refugee’s assistance issues;
- Proven experience in dealing with community members, local leaders and other stakeholders;
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage efficiently multiple priorities, deadlines and tasks with attention to details;
- Experience in conducting research, assessments and interviews is a strong asset;
