The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position within the Procurement Branch, Supply Chain Division, based in Rome, Italy.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION
The Procurement Branch (SCOP) is responsible for cost-effective, fair, and transparent purchase of food delivered to the people WFP serves, as well as the goods and services required by WFP to support its global humanitarian operations. SCOP procures a wide range of items used to power the organization’s operations worldwide – everything from software and telecommunications to vehicles and fuel among many others.
SCOP provides guidance and oversight to regional bureaux and country offices on procurement-related matters and is responsible for working with programmatic units to introduce sustainable procurement modalities, such as buying RSPO certified palm oil or pro-smallholder farmer purchases, as well as new systems to improve efficiency such as data analytics and traceability tools in conjunction with the Supply Chain Research and Development Branch.
Drawing on decades of experience in specialized humanitarian procurement, SCOP, upon request, also provides services to other United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and governmental partners, bridging the supply gap and procuring more efficiently on behalf of other organizations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support drafting of documents related to operational matters
- Provide assistance for unit meetings, included taking minutes
- Support with the creation of a central repository of Procurement system initiatives and consolidate internal and external communication
- Assist with presentations related to Procurement for internal/external audiences
- Contribute to data gathering and monitoring systems ensuring that rigorous quality standards are maintained
- Support the team in launching market assessments and in setting up a database by country and commodity type.
- Support with other tasks such as event planning and management
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university
- University course attendance in the past 12 months
- Ability to use interactive visual collaboration and digital communication tools is desirable
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Knowledge and understanding of United Nations, the World Food Programme and its role in humanitarian and development cooperation
- Experience with the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data is desirable

- Strong writing, analytical, research, and reporting skills
- Team player with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision in a diverse, multicultural team
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral)
- A proactive attitude and a sense of initiative and accountability
- Ability to work productively and in an organized fashion
- Strong drive, self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Experience with the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data is desirable
WORKING LANGUAGES
Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C), another UN language would be an advantage

Under the direct supervision of a relevant Procurement Officer
TRAINING COMPONENTS
Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:
- Have a greater understanding of World Food Programme’s work, including its role within the wider humanitarian system
- Have a general understanding of WFP’s overall operations and activities
- Have gained an understanding WFP’s procurement process and related implications
- Have further strengthened evidence-based research, reporting and presentation preparation skills

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
- Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
- WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
- WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
- Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
