Finance Director
Key Responsibilities:
- Supports the VPAF in preparation of draft, close-out, annual, and projected budgets for the University leadership and AUK Board of Trustees.
- Oversees and reports on budget execution throughout the year for data-driven decision-making and strategic planning.
- Participates in budget negotiations with concerned faculty and administrative units and provide guidance and support in budget management and expenditure control.
- Ensures appropriate institution-wide financial control and fiduciary stewardship, determines areas vulnerable from an audit perspective, and develops plans/recommendations to strengthen those areas in conjunction with Internal Audit.
- Supports the VPAF and President through the analysis and interpretation of financial information and aids in the development of business operations plans; forecasts critical milestones and potential obstacles and evaluates alternate courses of action; and balances short- term and long-term strategic objectives to maximize the financial performance of the University.
- Assists the VPAF in the development of policies and procedures to govern financial decision-making including budgets, expense management, and capital spending to ensure the achievement of expense management and revenue objectives.
- Provides updated quarterly budget statements to units to ensure academic and administrative leaders have access to the necessary financial data to make the appropriate decisions.
- Recommends necessary actions to ensure that AUK meets all legislative requirements of Kurdistan on accounting, taxation and overall fiscal operations and management.
- Oversee the preparation and analysis of financial statements in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and other relevant regulations.
- Coordinate with external auditors during financial audits and address any audit findings or recommendations.
- Supervises and participates in the performance evaluation of Finance Department staff, and provides capacity-building trainings as needed.
- Maintains AUK’s financial systems as per the established standards, policies and procedures.
- Ensures donor compliance in all financial systems.
- Ensures all purchase requests, bid summaries, purchase orders and relevant invoices conform with policies and procedures.
- Monitors bank and cash accounts and oversees needed reconciliations.
- Supervises the Student Financial Services.
- Conducts self in a professional and ethical manner at all times and will not enter into any activities which may adversely affect the image of the AUK.
- Strive for continuous improvement and innovation within the finance function, exploring opportunities for automation and process enhancements.
- Drive a fast-paced and efficient workflow within the finance department, ensuring timely and accurate completion of financial tasks, reports, and deliverables.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting/Finance or related area. A Master’s degree and/or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualification is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in accounting software and SAP.
- Proven Financial management experience.
- Strong knowledge of financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Excellent English-language speaking and writing skills.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Broad knowledge of accounting principles.
- Ability to work under pressure and within limited time frames.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills.
- Extensive experience in financial reporting, compliance, and working with auditors.
