BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
WFP is the largest cash actor in the humanitarian community: WFP transferred over US$3.3 billion to 56 million people in 2022. WFP is the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate 2020.
Where markets and the financial sector are functioning, cash-based transfers (CBT) can be an effective path to achieve food security and nutrition outcomes. The World Food Programme (WFP) uses CBT to empower people with choice to help them through an emergency and build resilience at the same time. In recent years, CBT operations have increased in scale and complexity. Centralized cash services were created to solve operational needs and helping Country Offices with processes such as assurance, reconciliation and tracking of distribution and payment cards.
The CBT division is looking for an experienced strategic and digital communications professional to support the team and provide clear communications for services that help Country Offices understand what services are and how to access them. The communications consultant will also manage all the CBT social media channels, create the overall social media strategy and content as needed. Reporting to the Head of Communications, and in close coordination with the Communications, Advocacy and Marketing Division (CAM), the consultant will support the overall communications as needed.
ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and implement a tailored internal communications plan and communication materials to sensitise and promote CBT services to a range of internal stakeholders, including senior management.
- Lead in the creation and implementation a comprehensive social media strategy, including sourcing and creation of high-quality content for use across both divisional and corporate accounts to raise awareness of WFP’s CBT work, increase following and boost engagement.
- Develop and execute an internal communications plan and communication materials to support the rollout and implementation of the new CBT policy.
- Lead in the organization and development of internal events to promote the activities and messages of the CBT division.
- Design and implement a strategy and communication materials for the CBT Yammer channel, in conjunction with the Knowledge Management Officer, Communications Officer Junior Consultant and the Human Capital Team to highlight the work of the division, encourage knowledge sharing and build employee engagement.
- Identify and produce stories highlighting WFP’s CBT operations and key messages for both internal and external websites.
- Partner with the Director and Deputy Director to identify internal speaking opportunities to highlight the work of the division and create speaker notes.
- Support the Head of Communications to identify relevant speaking and other external communications opportunities to raise the profile of WFP’s CBT work and create supporting materials and speaker notes.
- Represent the CBT division in any relevant communications fora as needed.
- Deploy to support Country Offices in communications around their cash programmes as needed.
- Partner with the Head of Communications in the execution of the overall Divisional communications strategy.
- Mentor junior team members to develop high quality communications products.
- Perform other related duties as required
DELIVERABLES/PRODUCTS:
- Implementation of an internal communications strategy for CBT services
- Implementation of an internal communications strategy for the CBT policy
- Implementation of a social media strategy
- Show an increase in the social media audience and their engagement on CBT social media channels.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
University degree in one or more of the following disciplines: social sciences, public relations, communications, or others relevant to international development and/or humanitarian assistance.
Experience:
At least 5 years of relevant experience in the humanitarian sector, either in
communications information management or reporting, with a demonstrated track
record of being able to craft communications products to influence a wide range
of stakeholders
Development and execution of communications strategies
Experience of delivering various written products that include key messages.
Prior experience of social media and social media campaigns
Experience building internal audiences on Yammer
Experience of working of advising senior management
Knowledge of WFP processes and communications standards.
Prior experience of working in WFP communications desirable.
Knowledge and Skills:
Excellent ability to effectively communicate orally, in writing and visually.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and Adobe Creative Suite.
Experience using social media channels including Twitter and LinkedIn and Yammer and building audiences
Language:
Fluency in English is required (proficiency/level C). Intermediate/level B or working knowledge of another UN official language among Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish is desirable.
