ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The WFP Technology Division is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations.
Technology and connectivity are rapidly reaching some of the most vulnerable people and places affected by crisis, but they are also increasingly expanding to the services responding to those same crises.
As one of the main humanitarian actors, WFP has the opportunity and the obligation to leverage data and technology to better know and serve those in need by digitally transforming the way it works.
JOB PURPOSE
To oversee the research and design activities carried out by cross functional teams to ensuring that the technologies deliver against the vision, are useful, usable and used.
The Human-centred Design Specialist supports the Technology Division (TEC) in defining the demand for solutions which are aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives by applying knowledge and best practices from areas such as Human-Centred Design (HCD), Service Design and Human Factors (HF). They support colleagues across the organization to build the culture, practices and rituals needed to ensure a service-oriented culture that puts people at the centre.
The position is based in Rome, HQ and reports to the Service Design and User Experience Lead.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
- Support the development of functional work plans, ensuring compliance with wider WFP policies, standards and strategies.
- Continuously improve guidelines, processes and procedures of Business Relationship Management, Business Analysis and IT Project Management functions.
- Build and nurture relationships with the business counterparts to understand and anticipate the direction of the business and ensure alignment of provider’s solutions with changing business requirements and priorities.
- Participate in identifying business needs and propose well-researched ideas for new or improved systems, tools and processes that assist meeting WFP objectives.
- Manage business expectations in servicing business needs and oversee success of solutions, seeking ongoing opportunities to support or increase the business value from those solutions.
- Propose change and continuous operational improvement that supports business capabilities, by defining needs, modeling the business and recommending solutions that deliver value for business priorities.
- Communicate business objectives, requirements and process flows, to ensure common understanding and prioritization between stakeholders for their smooth implementation.
- Test and perform in-depth analysis of IT solutions to ensure they address business objectives, needs, requirements and process flows efficiently and effectively.
- Manage estimates, business cases, planning, and risk identification to ensure the delivery of IT solutions into the business to agreed time, budget, scope and quality.
- Manage a team of staff, providing coaching, training and guidance to ensure appropriate development and enable high performance.
QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- Advanced university degree in Computer Science, social or humanistic sciences, engineering or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience or trainings/course.
Experience:
- A minimum of five (5) years of relevant progressively responsible postgraduate experience in HCD "Human-Centred Design (HCD)"
Language:
- Fluency (level C) in English language.
- Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese (a WFP’s working language)
MORE ABOUT YOU
- Proven experience in human-centred design, co-design, service design and user research methodologies, including leading cross-functional teams in discovery activities at both strategic and tactical levels and with high technology complexity.
- Knowledge of Human Factors (HF), Information Architecture (IA), Human-Centred Design (HCD), Ethnographic analysis, Design Workshops, Iterative Design, Business Process Analysis (BPA).
- Proven experience in working with agile development teams and in technology departments as a specialist in Human-Centred Design, Service Designer or discovery lead.
- Proven experience in project management, including Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
- Scrum Product Owner certification is desirable.
- Experience with implementing and advocating for HCD in a UN context is desirable.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
- This is an International Professional position and is open to all nationalities.
- Mobility is and continues to be, a core contractual requirement in WFP. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed term as well as a rotational contract with a probationary period of one year.
