Principal of the American International School

The Principal of the American International School, is responsible for overseeing the administrative and academic operations of the School. The Principal is expected to serve as a role model for school employees and required to exercise leadership, demonstrate vision, and empower others in order to deliver an international quality education to students that is based on the American model. S/he is also responsible for responding to the concerns of all stakeholders: teachers, parents and children. The Principal reports to the President of the American University of Kurdistan (AUK).

Key Responsibilities:

• Demonstrate responsibility and accountability for setting and advancing the academic and operational strategy of the School in line with the School’s strategic plan, mission, and vision.
• Chair the School’s Executive Committee.
• Develop, oversee, and sustain appropriate policies and procedures for the operations of the academic and administrative functions of the School.
• Work on the development of marketing, branding, and promotional materials for the school.
• Oversee the student experience, including the curriculum, learning and teaching, co-curriculars, and extra-curriculars.
• Ensure the School meets MSACESS’s standards and retains its accreditation.
• Comply with auditing, quality assurance and risk management procedures both internal and external.
• Oversee initiatives for the recruitment and retention of students.
• Ensure compliance with the regulations of the KRG Ministry of Education.
• Ensure that staff performance is assessed, has access to the necessary support, is recognized for their accomplishments, and development plans are implemented as appropriate.
• Ensure an environment that is collaborative and positive.
• Engage parents in appropriate venues and processes as they are chief stakeholders in their children’s education.
• Other duties as assigned by the President of the AUK.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Master’s in Education (Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education preferred).
• Knowledge and experience with U.S. accreditation for Schools.
• At least 5 years of experience as a teacher in K-12 in an American-style School.
• Excellent communication skills; proficiency in speaking and writing in English.
• Experience in curriculum development.
• Experience in capacity-building among teachers.
• Managerial experience in K-12 including oversight of budget management, student recruitment and retention, and overseeing building operations (preferred).
