Duty Station: Karak (cover Tafileh and Ma’an).

Reports to: (Hierarchical and Technical) Protection Coordinator.

Status: Full Time.

Contract Duration: From 01/06/2023 till 31/01/2024 renewable based on performance and availability of funds

About INTERSOS:

INTERSOS is an Italian humanitarian organization that works all over the world bringing assistance to people in danger, including victims of natural disasters and armed conflicts. We intervene to effectively meet the needs of people in crisis, with particular attention to vulnerable groups, women and children. We provide primary assistance in terms of food, shelter, medical assistance and basic goods, while also ensuring that basic needs, education, safe water and health needs are met during the recovery phase.

Since 2012, INTERSOS has had operations in the Middle East to contribute towards ensuring emergency relief and social protection assistance for Syrian refugees fleeing their home in search of safety, with special focus on most vulnerable groups (children, women, elderly and persons with special needs).

In Jordan, INTERSOS has focused its humanitarian response on supporting Syrian families displaced across urban and rural areas, as well as vulnerable host communities, with a programme that concentrates on protection

Purpose/objective of the position:

The psychologist will provide specialized services and individual psychological support for GBV survivors, with moderate to severe mental and/or emotional disorders in the different areas of intervention. The Psychologist will provide technical support to protection staffs to implement sound psychosocial support (PSS) activities for children and adults, and will ensure a non-discriminatory approach, act according to the best interests of the child, ensure accountability, respect professional boundaries, and avoid conflicts of interest.

Generic Duties:

  • Collaborate with the Protection Coordinator for the development of the project’s overall PSS component.
  • Assist protection cases with identified mental or emotional disorders referred internally or externally.
  • Conduct case-by-case needs assessments for the diagnosis of psychological disorders and identification of treatment and therapy in line with Intersos MHPSS guidelines.
  • Develop individual assistance plans and conduct psychological counselling utilizing various techniques in line with Intersos MHPSS guidelines and Psychological Case Management SOP.
  • Implement the treatment plan of psychological distress cases in coordination with the case management team.
  • In coordination with the Protection Coordinator ensure safe spaces readiness activities are conducted and actions taken to meet safety and warmlines of the spaces.
  • Document progress on cases, maintaining strict protocols for confidentiality and consent, and ensure that data protection protocols are respected.
  • Provide group and individual counselling sessions, according to identified needs.
  • Conduct Focused Group Interventions following identified or internally developed curriculum, and establish and strengthen referral pathways.
  • Provide periodic and anonymized feedback to the Protection Coordinator and Case Workers Team Leader on issues that may require their intervention or guidance.
  • Participate in internal case management meeting and bring to the immediate attention of the Line Manager / Protection Coordinator any emergency and specific need.
  • Facilitate internal trainings to protection staffs on the provision of basic psychosocial counselling as part of the case management. Report any problem and/or training need identified during the monitoring of the implementation of psychosocial activities.
  • Facilitate trainings for internal protection staffs and communities on psychosocial first aid (PFA), identification and assessment of people with psychological distress.
  • Strengthen community based psychosocial support and peer support group activities through mapping the community-based structures that respond to MHPSS issues and building their capacity.
  • Provide coaching and support to the field staffs in the implementation of structured MHPSS activities and ensure standardization across the field locations.
  • Carry out all tasks respecting key protection principles, including but not limited to: do no harm, non-discrimination, confidentiality, accountability and need-to-know principles.
  • Establish and ensure efficient running of the help desks within the field locations.
  • Collaborate with the Social worker teams in ensuring timely supplies and replacing of PSS materials.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relations with relevant partners and other project stakeholders working in the project areas.
  • Proactively participate in relevant working groups and coordination meetings, as requested by the Line Manager.

Specific Duties:

  • Conduct individual counselling sessions inside Family Protection Department (FPD) for persons of concerns referred through case management process.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the INTERSOS Code of Conduct and policies;
  • Ensure the respect of the core humanitarian principles: neutrality, impartiality, independence and humanity and the respect of the “do no harm” principle of humanitarian action.
  • Strictly follow the internal procedures, policies (PSEA, CPP etc.) and guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Education:

  • University degree in Psychology.

Professional Requirements:

  • Ideally at least 3 years of experience in protection related sectors, including at least 1 year of experience work in an INGO.

  • Strong team spirit, comfortable in a multi-cultural environment

Languages:

  • Fluency in Arabic.
  • Good working English knowledge.
