The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position in the Communications Team at the United Nations World Food Programme Office to the EU, based in Brussels, Belgium.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE OFFICE:
The main objective of the WFP Brussels Office is to support country offices, regional bureaux, and HQ divisions in mobilizing funds from the European Union (EU). It is achieved by establishing and fostering partnerships with a number of EU institutions as well as providing technical support to WFP country offices during the negotiation, formulation, and management of EU contracts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Update, maintain and expand the communications team’s visibility overview documents in Salesforce and Excel that keep track of the visibility requirements (which range from banners and press releases to tweets and videos) that WFP produces as part of our contracts with the European Union.
- Help the communications team follow up with WFP country offices and their communications staff on upcoming and outstanding visibility requirements.
- Help the communications team run paid ad campaigns connected to European Union contracts — this can include copywriting for ads, assisting in campaign setup, monitoring & reporting, or other content creation.
- Help WFP country offices meet visibility requirements by creating content for our @WFP_Europe twitter account (primarily using Canva and Wochit) and help with content creation for Brussels-based initiatives done by the comms team (videos featuring EU officials, quote cards and animated GIFs to highlight meetings or events in Brussels, etc.).
- Help the communications team prepare and run events, exhibits, panels and other in-person initiatives here in Brussels, working closely with the Stakeholder Relations & Policy Development team and EU counterparts as necessary.
- Update and maintain the list of Brussels/EU-related media contacts, and help the team look for opportunities to increase coverage of WFP priorities in Brussels media.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university.
- University course attendance in the past 12 months.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Good at writing for social media and good overall digital skillset.
- Fast with spreadsheets and basic database work.
- Good graphic design skills and ability to quickly work with corporate brand templates.
- Good media literacy.
- Solid knowledge of the European Union.
WORKING LANGUAGES
Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C).
SUPERVISION
Under the direct supervision of the Communications Team lead, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be a key part of the supervision.
TRAINING COMPONENTS
Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, WeLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:
- Be able to produce a range of social media content that meets European Union visibility requirements.
- Have a good sense of the “Brussels Bubble” media landscape and its relevancy to WFP.
- Fully understand how organizations like WFP produce visibility material — from field offices and at the Brussels level — for partners like the EU.
- Have a good understanding of the EU’s humanitarian and development programmes and policies.
- Have a good understanding of UN and WFP procedures and terminology.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
- Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of USD 1,000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas, and related costs.
- WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
- WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
- Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers, or sisters.
