Job Purpose

The Nutrition Officer will be based in Baidoa Field Officer under the South Border Area Office with operational coverage of the three regions (Bay, Bakool and Lower Shabelle) in Southwest State of Somalia. The job purpose is to provide support to the Nutrition Programmes and activities to contribute to meeting the nutritional needs of the WFP targeted population.

Key Accountabilities (not all-inclusive):

  • Contribute to the development of nutrition projects and activities, plans and processes ensuring alignment with wider nutrition policies and guidance.
  • Provide support to the management of nutrition response, ensuring a coordinated approach with the wider programmes / activities that complies with WFP standards and procedures.
  • Support and coordinate the development of data gathering and monitoring / assessment ensuring that rigorous quality standards are maintained.
  • Track and analyze data to provide input into reporting tools (ONA-MODA, COMET) and contribute to the preparation of accurate and timely reporting on nutrition activities.
  • Engage with UNICEF, Ministry of Health and the subnational nutrition cluster to map out the nutrition needs, coverage gaps and possible assistance packages.
  • Provide technical and strategic inputs to the sub-national nutrition cluster.
  • Liaise with Cooperating partners through regular meetings and site visits to monitor ongoing activities for effective collaboration, timeliness, and efficiency.
  • Support the identification of potential partners and partnership negotiations to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach to meeting nutrition needs.
  • Support in the implementation of the joint UNICEF- WFP micro plans to improve the coordination and integration of acute malnutrition treatment programmes improving coverage, outreach, effectiveness, and programme quality.
  • Support the coordination of nutrition pipeline management, including NFIs and nutrition Commodities in close coordination with the Programme and Logistics Unit.
  • Coordinate the WFP related reporting in respect of timelines, including weekly ad hoc reports from cooperating partners, ONA- MODA reports submission by the CPs.
  • Support the capacity strengthening of WFP partners, staff, and state and regional government line ministries of health to prepare for and respond to nutrition needs, including review of training materials and production of appropriate tools and products.
  • Conduct field visits to enhance programme quality and implementation.
  • Support and enhance the use of SCOPE for nutrition by ensuring timely registration by partners
  • Support the referral mechanism and linkages between other WFP supported programmes and nutrition, identify the required resources for a better implementation.
  • Support the International Nutrition Officer in coordinating the cash for prevention programme in Baidoa to ensure effective implementation.
  • Guide junior staff and supporting them with more complex analysis and queries.

Minimum Role Requirements:

Education: Advanced University degree in Public Health Nutrition, Food Systems and Transformation, Social Sciences, and other related field is required.

Experience: At least Eight (8) years progressive work experience in nutrition programmes implementation, public health/ food security/ nutrition related activities preferably in humanitarian context.

Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Somali is required. Proficiency in speaking Maai language is an added advantage.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Experience in nutrition related programmes implementation, public health/ food security/ nutrition related activities preferably in humanitarian context, with international NGOs, United Nations System, or with the governmental institutions with demonstrated leadership role in terms of emergency nutrition coordination.
  • Solid knowledge of nutrition needs assessment in crisis, and prevention of malnutrition in emergency contexts.

Situation Analysis and Evidence Assessment Able to appropriately interpret the nutrition situation, analyze primary causes of malnutrition, define limitations to the analysis (e.g. seasonality) and prepare an overview of the food security and nutrition situation in country.
Knowledge of Public Health Has foundational knowledge of the core public health sciences (i.e., biostatistics, epidemiology, social science, environmental health, and prevention of chronic and infectious disease and injury) in order to assess a country’s/region’s health situation.
Knowledge of Food System Ability to analyze how food systems influence the diets of vulnerable groups and identify how and where food systems may contribute to specific nutrient gaps.
Applying Programme & Policy Standards Leverages nutrition knowledge to provide technical advice to governments to design and implement country nutrition programmes that follow international and WFP agency standards and guidance.
