Multiple sub-functions and multiple locations

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position within multiple Programme and Policy (P&P) units, based in multiple locations across Africa and Asia and Europe. Remote internship is a possibility for some of the opportunities.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION:

Programme Policy Development Department (PD) engages in a broad range of policy and programmatic areas that is reflective of our dual mandate – development and emergency. The global objective of the Programme and Policy (P&P) division is to support countries to end hunger and deliver high-quality programmes that bridge the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus in order to achieve transformational change for vulnerable people: from saving lives to changing lives.

This P&P Internship programme offers a unique hands-on experience to students and recent graduates across the programme management and policy formulation in Country Offices, Regional Bureaus or Headquarters in various programmatic areas such as: Resilience, Food Assistance for Assets, Livelihoods, Social Protection, Cash Based Transfers, Gender, School Feeding, Food security and others. Moreover, there are opportunities for candidates interested in such areas as Communications, Graphics, Talent Management, Information and content management and others.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Title of Post: Programme & Policy Internship
  • Duty Station: Various: Cairo, Conakry, Dushanbe, Maputo, Metro Manila, Mogadishu, Nouakchott, Phnom Penh, Rome, Tindouf. Remote working is a possibility for some of the opportunities based in Rome. This vacancy can be used to hire interns for related P&P opportunities in other locations.
  • Duration of internship: various: 4 – 8 months
  • Expected Start Date: various: May – July 2023

Note: Detailed information on the country of assignment and deliverables will be shared with the longlisted candidates selected from this vacancy announcement to confirm their interest and availability for an internship opportunity in a specific thematic area and duty station.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of a Programme Policy Officer of each duty station, the candidate will perform some of the following duties:

  • Contribute to data gathering and monitoring systems ensuring that rigorous quality standards are maintained;
  • Conduct context-specific research, develop country briefs, information sheets and other knowledge management materials;
  • Provide support to the development of a various projects, plans and processes of the assigned unit to facilitate decision-making;
  • Contribute to the process of accurate and timely reporting on programmes and activities;
  • Support the development of the knowledge management structure within assigned unit, to assist with the design and organization of corresponding repository tools;
  • Liaise with internal counterparts to ensure effective collaboration and to monitor ongoing projects;
  • Provide support in other relevant areas as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university;
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months.

Note: The Programme will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.

  • Areas of study relevant to the specific area of Internship opportunity will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian and development challenges and issues
  • Knowledge and understanding of United Nations, the World Food Programme and its role in humanitarian and development cooperation
  • Experience with the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data is desirable.
  • Ability to use interactive visual collaboration and digital communication tools is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Strong writing, analytical, research, and reporting skills;
  • Team player with the ability to work independently with minimum supervision in a diverse, multicultural team;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral);
  • A proactive attitude and a sense of initiative and accountability.
  • Ability to work productively and in an organized fashion.
  • Strong drive, self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy;

WORKING LANGUAGES

Fluency (level C) in English language is required. Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language would be an asset: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or WFP’s working language, Portuguese.

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of a relevant staff member, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Have a greater understanding of the World Food Programme’s work and its role within the wider humanitarian system.
  • Have a general understanding of WFP overall operations and activities in the region, as well prioritized agendas of the duty station
  • Understand the programme management cycle its application in different contexts
  • Developed capacity on evidence-based research and reporting
  • Further strengthened drafting and presentation skills.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
