BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
To support increased engagement with its audiences, the UN World Food Programme has significant plans for growth in brand awareness, story content and broader supporter engagement. Powerful and engaging story-telling and compelling copy will be critical to achieving these ambitious plans.
The Senior Creative Copywriter will produce high quality copy for marketing and engagement, working with a team of creative professionals on large- and small-scale marketing projects and campaigns, primarily for digital channels. This will include developing story content, brand-positioning messaging as well as propositions that position WFP, our work, and the people we serve in an engaging way, to help multiple stakeholders and teams communicate with their audiences and achieve differentiation and cut through in a crowded marketplace. These audiences targeted will be from multiple countries, so although communications will be generated and produced in English, they will need to resonate in multiple countries.
The consultant should have experience working with a diverse range of clients, including leading humanitarian and development agencies – either UN or international NGOs – and in an agency setting. This experience should include producing copy for direct marketing and ideally for engaging and raising funds from individual supporters, in line with brand guidelines and organizational messaging. This is a full-time position for 11 months.
ACCOUNTABITLITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the general supervision and guidance of the Creative and Branding Manager in the Creative, Content and Branding team, the Senior Creative Copywriter will be responsible for the following key duties:
- Developing strong, compelling copy for digital, print, video and occasional offline initiatives (including for supporter-focused copy, for individual supporter retention and acquisition);
- Producing written story content (case studies, photo stories, infographics, donor engagement pieces) for use across a variety of channels;
- Producing targeted and engaging copy for online marketing campaigns and activities based on identified projects/programs. This will include copywriting in response to sudden-onset emergencies, drawing from pre-approved organizational messaging;
- Producing engagement content and copy for digital and other platforms including paid digital advertising, landing pages and email marketing;
- Producing written content for offline marketing activities (events, installations, out of home campaigns);
- Producing content for internal communications (internal newsletters, intranet articles)
- Taking the lead on presenting copy and/or creative concept to commissioning teams, as needed;
- Leading and participating in brainstorms/creative sessions to generate ideas and directions for specific projects and campaigns, as needed;
- Completing ad-hoc writing tasks as requested;
- Managing Creative Video Editor within Creative and Branding team
- Supporting junior colleagues in capacity building activities to develop copywriting and concepting skills across the unit and organisation
- Editing in-house existing content to ensure accuracy and brand consistency;
- Supporting WFP brand awareness aims and ensure all copy respects WFP’s tone of voice, brand message guidelines, and global editorial standards, while driving supporter engagement and an increased level of retention and acquisition of new supporters;
- Maintaining voice, tone, and terminology guidance to incorporate updated input from colleagues and broader language changes within the humanitarian/development sector
- Support capacity building initiatives for colleagues to develop and strengthen copywriting skills (group trainings, template creation and distribution)
- Managing multiple projects and deliver to brief, deadline and budget.
- Being available for ‘out of hours’ on-call work (including during weekends) in the event of a humanitarian or other emergency appeal;
- Being willing to adapt and ‘roll your sleeves up’ to get the work done across a small team with big ambitions.
Occasional travel to Rome and/or WFP country operations, as requested/needed.
DELIVERABLES:
- Developed high quality copy for digital, print, video, and occasional offline initiatives, including brand-positioning messaging, written story content, internal newsletters, landing page copy and copy for paid digital advertising.
- Produced targeted and engaging copy for online marketing campaigns and activities, including copywriting in response to sudden-onset emergencies.
- Edited in-house existing content to ensure accuracy and brand consistency and produced content and copy that respects WFP's tone of voice, brand message guidelines, and global editorial standards.
- Maintained voice, tone, and terminology guidance, to allow teams to craft on-brand engagement content from pre-defined organizational language.
- Developed relationships with and worked effectively with key stakeholders and colleagues across Creative, Content and Branding and CAM more generally.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education: Advanced University degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Writing, English or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses. |

Experience: At least 5 years of relevant professional experience with writing and producing copy to engage various audiences, including for marketing purposes. |

Knowledge & Skills:

Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (level C) is required. An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is a plus.
