Job Purpose:
To provide effective specialized support and technical analyses to policy and programme activities that effectively meet food assistance needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with implementing partners and actively monitor progress and performance of food system project activities including training of farmers, post-harvest handling support, productive asset creation (water dams/pans, borehole or shallow well, market linkage assistance, among others) to ensure deadlines and targets are met.
- Provide supervision and support for the Training of Trainers on post-harvest loss reduction and access to markets.
- Participate in developing and reviewing of social and behavior change communication messages.
- Engage with target smallholder farmers, producer groups, and agro-dealers regularly to identify food systems needs, possible solutions, anticipate challenges and ensure smooth communication.
- Foster relationships and communication with relevant stakeholders/ mechanisms, such as other cooperating partners, Food security cluster coordination mechanisms, relevant government line ministries, NGOs, civil societies and community leaders and project target groups.
- Coordinate and liaise with internal counterparts to enable effective collaboration, implementation and monitoring of ongoing project activities.
- Contribute to the writing of food systems report at Area Office level.
- Ensure that data and information on food system projects presented to the stakeholders is accurate, consistent and aligned with WFP's communication protocol.
- Provide specialized project management support to ensure that technical support is provided or resourced following WFP’s policies and procedures.
- Support the capacity building of WFP staff, cooperating partners and national government on food systems, agriculture, markets and market systems, agro-value chains, climate change and adaptation and other thematic areas as may be defined in the food systems project.
Do you meet the minimum role requirements?
Academic Qualifications: A university degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agronomy, Engineering (Environmental Engineering, Agriculture Engineering), Food Security, Animal Science/ Animal Production, Range Management or other field relevant to international development assistance.
Experience: A minimum of 6 years progressive work experience do you have in food security/ agriculture/ environment and market systems development.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience in implementing programmes in agriculture value chain/ food security/ natural resource management.
- Conversant with participatory community engagement approaches such as participatory rural appraisal, participatory learning and action, community managed disaster risk reduction.
- Knowlegeable on broader aspects of agricultural extension methodologies such as farmer/pastoral/ agro-pastoral field schools, demonstrations.
- Deep understanding of project cycle management (PCM) including design, planning, implementation, monitoring and adaptation.
- Has a deep understanding on how to monitor technical activities related to production, post- harvest losses, and market linkages with smallholder farmers and/or co-operatives.
- Broader understanding of cross cutting issues in humanitarian and development programming such as conflict sensitive programming, nutrition sensitive programming and gender sensitive programming.
- Experience working with organizations that have medium to large food security and agriculture portfolio and longer-term projects.
Language: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Somali is required
