Job Description

The IRC Jordan program was established in 2007 in support of Iraqi refugees and expanded greatly to address the needs of people fleeing the conflict in Syria. Jordan, a country of 11 million, currently hosts more than 1,300,000 refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons. In Jordan, the IRC implements health, women’s protection and empowerment, early childhood development and economic recovery programming in eight governorates.
Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Jordan Policy Advocacy and Communications (PAC) Coordinator, the Senior Communication Manager (SCM) will design, plan, and produce the country program’s internal and external communications. The SCM will ensure regular, timely, and high-quality communications content to showcase the project’s/programs’ successes and highlight the needs of IRC’s clients through a range of products including success stories, information, and fact sheets, press releases, social media posts, etc. Working with the PAC Coordinator, the SCM will ensure that IRC’s external messaging is consistent and engaging, and addresses a wide range of audiences including donors, policy makers and the public. The SCM will ensure all communications materials are consistent with the IRC’s visibility guidelines, donor visibility guidelines, security and safeguarding considerations and advocacy priorities.
Responsibilities:
Technical
- Develop gender sensitive communications plans, campaigns, events, and other initiatives in support of program activities.
- Working in close collaboration with IRC program teams, and IRC communications staff, collect and produce high-quality communication materials including human interest stories, press releases, talking points, photos, blogs, and videos.
- Maintain a calendar of donor deliverables which is accessible to program and communications colleagues, and support in the collation and submission of products to the donor by deadline.
- Create internal communication content such as an internal newsletter for IRC staff in Jordan and other interested stakeholders.
- Ensure timely dissemination and amplification of IRC Jordan content via IRC and non-IRC communications channels.
- Closely monitor humanitarian and development related media pertaining to Jordan, ensure that relevant information is analyzed and communicated to country program senior leadership.
- Ensure adherence to communication policies, protocols, standards, and brand compliance.
- Train IRC and partner organization staff on communications as needed.
- Ensure IRC visibility in the organization’s events/conferences/workshops as well as those of donors and partners when applicable, and provide media support (photography, videography, etc.);
Coordination and liaison
- Work closely with the PAC Coordinator to develop and maintain professional media relations, to ensure that important external stakeholders, such as governments, private sector, NGOs etc. have awareness of refugee and host community issues in Jordan.
- Liaise with journalists and prepare field staff and beneficiaries for media visits.
- In coordination with the program teams, organize communications/visibility aspects of donor visits.
- Liaise with other agencies on inter-agency communications and mass information campaigns.
Resource Management
- Prepare budgets for communications activities during proposal development under guidance of PAC Coordinator.
Other
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
Key Working Relationships:
Position Reports to Policy, Advocacy and Communication Coordinator
Position is Managed in Partnership with: Regional Senior Media & Communications Manager
Close collaboration with: Regional Policy, Advocacy, and Communications team, Program Coordinators, Field Coordinators, Access, and Security Manager.
Key External Contacts: Communications teams in other organizations; relevant staff in international and national NGOs as agreed by PAC Coordinator and Program teams.
Qualifications
Job Requirements:
- Education: University Degree in communications, journalism, or related fields.
- Work Experience: At least 3 to 5 years relevant job experience, with experience in crafting and delivering compelling communications materials = Previous experience working in an NGO or international organization in a similar role is a plus.
- Excellent storytelling and writing skills (proficiency in written English is required)
- Fluent (spoken and written) English and Arabic is essential.
- Ability to identify and develop gender sensitive content for internal and external communications.
- Ability to take high quality, professional photos in various settings, and basic photo editing is desirable, as is the ability to produce and edit video for social media use.
- Ability to create infographics, and knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (esp. Final Cut, Illustrator, Photoshop and In Design).
- Well organized with ability to work on several tasks under pressure.
- Ability to build strong relationships and work independently and take initiative.
- Demonstrated creativity, ability to apply innovative thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Culturally sensitive, able, and interested in working with a multi-ethnic team.
- Strong commitment to the IRC’s mission, purpose, and values.
Working Environment: Standard office work environment. Candidates will be expected to spend up to 30% of their time in the field.
