We are currently seeking to fill an intern position in the Nutrition Outreach & Advocacy (NOA) Team, Nutrition Division, based in Rome, Italy.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION:
The current prevalence of malnutrition in children is alarming. Over 50 million children suffer from acute malnutrition and over 150 million suffer from stunting. Maternal and child undernutrition is the underlying cause of approximately 45% of all mortality in children under 5. Not only do undernutrition levels remain stubbornly high, but numbers of overweight persons are growing exponentially, even in poor countries.
As the United Nations frontline agency in the fight against hunger and malnutrition, the World Food Programme (WFP) is adapting to meet the current and emerging global nutrition challenges. This includes enhancing organisational capacity to reach vulnerable populations affected by acute malnutrition, as well as expanding our portfolio to find lasting solutions for populations affected by poor diets and chronic malnutrition.
The purpose of the internship assignment is to support the Nutrition Outreach and Advocacy (NOA) team with the resource mobilization (RM) and communications efforts of the Nutrition Division. The intern will support the production/review of donor proposals, reporting, pitches, info products/briefs as well as various communications materials. The role with support NOA team’s effort to boost WFP’s global voice and building strategic partnerships in nutrition.
The intern will work from WFP’s headquarters based in Rome. Meetings will take place at least once a week and more frequently when tasks need to be assigned/explained (through Teams meetings and attendance at any in-person meetings in Rome, when relevant).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Working in the Nutrition Outreach & Advocacy (NOA) Team, under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Engagement Officer, NOA, the candidate will perform the following duties:
- Support the design and organisation of high-level events and missions, that will include Ambassadorial and Ministerial level participation.
- Support the preparation of briefing documents, presentations and communication for the Nutrition Division.
- Support the drafting of nutrition donor intel documentation, profiles, and funding landscapes.
- Support drafting of high-quality fundraising proposals, concept notes and pitch documents.
- Support the organization of external facing events, donor missions, and fundraising campaigns.
- Support liaison with external allies and advocates.
- Keep abreast of trends and issues in the Nutrition community, ensuring that WFP is well positioned.
- Support other team initiatives as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university, in International Relations, Political Sciences or similar fields;
- University course attendance in the past 12 months, in International Relations, Political Sciences or similar fields.
- Professional/volunteer experience with organizations working on development and/or humanitarian issues.
- Understanding of international affairs and/or nutrition-related issues.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Strong brief and concept writing skills.
- Strong communication skills.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships.
- Ability to prioritize and manage workload independently.
- Has motivated team spirit and contributed to a gender-balanced, inclusive, and sound working environment.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) and basic knowledge of layouts/designs.
- Strong written and communication skills are highly desirable. Proven ability to write highly concise documents in English.
- Knowledge of both international relations and nutrition is desirable. Good understanding of international affairs and/or nutrition-related issues.
- Two or more years of relevant professional/volunteer experience with organizations working on development and humanitarian issues desirable
WORKING LANGUAGES
Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C).
An additional UN language is considered an asset: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese
SUPERVISION
Under the direct supervision of the Engagement Officer in the Nutrition Outreach & Advocacy (NOA) Team.
TRAINING COMPONENTS
Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.
LEARNING ELEMENTS
At the end of the assignment, the Intern should have:
- Supported the production of high-quality nutrition briefing documents, presentations, and talking points for Nutrition Division.
- Supported the development of nutrition donor intel documentation, profiles, and pitches completed and in use.
- Supported the production of effective funding proposals and concept notes.
- Worked with people at all levels and supported cross-departmental cooperation.
In addition to getting an opportunity to learn how WFP and the United Nations system function, the intern will also be able to access WFP online training materials on a variety of topics.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
- Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
- WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
- WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
- WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
