JOB PURPOSE
To perform specialised communications activities, and contribute to the development of communications products/services and campaigns that maintain and enhance the visibility and reputation of WFP and supports fundraising activities.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
As a member of the Regional Bureau Communication team, the Communications Assistant will specifically:
- Develop and maintain a contact list of journalists and media outlets and support the flow of news/information about WFP’s work to the media.
- Monitor and analyse traditional and social media to inform the development and/or evaluation of messaging, external communication activities and strategies.
- Contribute to regular regional media and communication monitoring and analyses to ensure timely and effective adjustments to the implementation of the communication strategy.
- Contribute to writing and editing news releases, messaging documents, website stories, media pitches, presentations, and other advocacy and communication material that accurately and effectively communicate WFP’s voice on relevant issues and is aligned with WFP’s communication strategy, narrative, and messaging.
- Contribute to drafting messages that effectively communicate the WFP's goals and objectives, and that inspire and engage target audiences.
- Liaise with other functions to collate information that supports in directing and developing regional and country-level messaging.
- Update and maintain a comprehensive and accurate media list for the region.
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets to promote WFP's work and goals.
- Serve as point of contact between the WFP Regional Bureau and the media.
- Upload material on Arabic and English websites.
- Write news stories and other written content
- Edit and proofread written content as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Media, International Relations, Political Science or other relevant fields and studies.
Experience:
A minimum of 7 years of professional experience in journalism, communication, or a related fields with at least 2 years of them as a journalist.
Knowledge & Skills:
The incumbent should have the following skills and experience:
- Strong writing and editing skills, with experience in writing news stories and advocacy messages.
- Ability to research and gather information on current events and developments in the MENA region.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and their use in communication and advocacy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build relationships with journalists and media outlets.
- Experience in media liaison and media list management.
- Familiarity with the WFP the UN system and its mandates and objectives in the region.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
- Fluency in English and Arabic, with excellent writing and editing skills in both languages.
Languages:
Fluency (both oral and written) in English and Arabic (proficient/level C).
