BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change. Around 20,000 people work for the organization, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry poor. To reach a world with zero hunger, WFP is investing in and growing private sector fundraising and partnerships. Serving as a broker between WFP and the private sector, WFP’s Private Partnerships and Fundraising Division (PPF) strives to mobilize funding, technical assistance, innovative solutions and visibility and awareness to help WFP fulfil its mission, while offering companies and the wider public the opportunity to contribute to a world with zero hunger.
ShareTheMeal is WFP’s fundraising and awareness-raising app. Free to download, the award-winning app is a pioneering way for people to join our efforts in creating a world with zero hunger.
ShareTheMeal currently has more than 9.3 million users worldwide, who have shared more than 165 million meals (US$ 130 million). WFP is pursuing an ambitious growth strategy for individual giving, and ShareTheMeal is a key driver for this strategy going forward. The team, located in Berlin and also remotely, is focused on increasing the funds raised to help get to zero hunger by further developing the app and web to include new and innovative features, increasing the engagement of existing users and growing the userbase through marketing and communication initiatives. As the user base has grown, there is a significant opportunity to increase funds raised from existing users and deliver an exceptional experience to build a long-term relationship with each supporter
The position is expected to head the Software Engineering team of ShareTheMeal to contribute to and create innovative ways to improve the fundraising app, with the aim of increasing user engagement and awareness in support of WFP and PPF goals.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Consultant, reporting to the Head of the ShareTheMeal initiative, is expected to:
Lead the Software Engineering team of ShareTheMeal and advise/consult the Individual Fundraising teams where needed
- Lead high-performing teams to create and implement strategic initiatives in support of the goals and priorities across the board, adopting Agile principles to continuously improve working process driving business value for WFP and PPF.
- Mentor and coach direct reports and their reports as needed, to ensure performance in the team is sustained and continuously improved, including the team of Android, iOS, Web, QA, Backend and Infrastructure Engineers and Lead Engineers.
- Ensure ways of working and team processes are optimized for high impact output, all the while striking a balance between agility and the need to navigate established external structures.
- Instil a culture of user centricity and experimentation, based on data and insights in collaboration with the BI Hub team.
- Own the planning and prioritising of resources across the Software Engineering team to ensure an effectiveness on delivery and ongoing maintenance/support of our platforms and services.
Develop the tech strategy and tech objectives and key results (OKRs) & ensure operational excellence in driving the strategy implementation
- Improve internal tooling and automation, interface, consult and collaborate with WFP’s Technology Division (TEC) on tools and processes, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of IT Policies and Standards at WFP.
- Plan, develop, and implement an updated tech strategy and roadmap for the ShareTheMeal team, including the establishment of OKRs to measure performance delivery.
- Advise IF tech teams on tech strategy and implementations, assisting with relevant audits and reviews.
- Ensure the IT solution and its environment are designed, developed, implemented, secured, tested and backed-up within the required quality requirements.
- Ensure the IT solution is compliant with all relevant technological and organisational regulatory requirements and procedures, as outlined in WFP's Directive on IT Solutions Management (TEC2020/001).
- Work collaboratively with the staff, where relevant, and at all levels across the organisation to ensure that digital and technology products are customer-led and scalable.
- Collaborate with tech vendors and partners and drive decisions that optimize for output for WFP.
Other
- Stay abreast of sector trends in major donor fundraising and bring relevant learnings to the team.
- Work with our existing global systems, policies, and processes to deliver the objectives of this role in a compliant, collaborative, and efficient way.
- Any other tasks as consummate with the level of experience and required to support the Tech team and PPF.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
- A stable and engaged ShareTheMeal Software Engineering team which meets agreed objectives but is also fulfilled and growing alongside the organization to deliver on its future ambitions.
- A tech strategy and roadmap for 2023 onwards, working with the Head of ShareTheMeal to support the achievement of the PSPF strategy.
- Stable operations of the ShareTheMeal mobile app, website, backend and infrastructure.
- Engaged, high performing teams who are driven by our mission and excited to continue working at ShareTheMeal.
- Robust IT solutions fully compliant with applicable guidelines, including WFP's Guidelines for Software Solutions.
- Clean source code of IT solutions, in WFP source code repositories.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education: Graduate Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or other related field.
Experience: At least 9 years of experience in software engineering with experience of scaling native mobile applications and web platforms to millions of users. At least 4 years of experience managing software teams.
Knowledge & Skills:
- In-depth knowledge and proficiency with mainstream software design & development technologies and methodologies, developing high-quality IT solutions, and Agile Scrum;
- Knowledge of Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD);
- Knowledge of Software Optimization;
- Understanding of accessibility, security compliance, design principles behind a scalable IT solution, and the differences between delivery platforms, such as mobile vs desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform;

- Ability to integrate multiple data sources and databases into one system, and create database schemas that represent and support business processes;
- Experience developing native mobile application using Kotlin and Swift;
- Experience with cloud technologies like AWS, Docker, Terraform, Redis, etc.;
- Experience in software development within an international organisation or startup company required;
- Strong analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative;
- Ability to interact with managers with maturity and tact;
- Mature judgment with strong interpersonal skills;
- Collaborative spirit able to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures and to act with credibility and diplomacy;
- Strong time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work to tight deadlines
- Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy;
- Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the World Food Programme.
Languages: In addition to a high proficiency in written and spoken English, knowledge of a second UN language is a plus.
