The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill a knowledge management and partnership intern position in the Global Network Against Food Crises of the Programme – Humanitarian and Development Division (PRO), based in Rome, Italy or Remote.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE GLOBAL NETWORK AGAINST FOOD CRISES – PRO

The Global Network Against Food Crises (GNAFC) reporting to the Director of Programme – Humanitarian and Development Division, supports strategic and global level policy engagement, advocacy and partnership building to inform and position the organization within the evolving global discourse on the HDP nexus. Based on WFP’s new Strategic Plan, the above vision would be realized through the development of the Global Network Against Food Crisis, establishing this as the key platform through which collective action to prevent famines and reduce need is implemented.

The GNAFC is an alliance of humanitarian and development actors united by the commitment to tackle the root causes of food crises and promote sustainable solutions through shared analysis and knowledge, strengthened coordination in evidence-based responses and collective efforts across the Humanitarian, Development and Peace (HDP) nexus. Together with partners such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), we publish reports such as the Global Report on Food Crises, Hunger Hotspots, and others found in our Resources section as well as events addressing food insecurity, and its root causes in climate, conflict and economic factors

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Duration of internship: 6 months with possibility of extension
  • Expected Start Date: April 2023

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the Policy and Programme Officer, the candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Assist the Knowledge Management Focal in maintaining the Teams Space, SharePoint Folders, WFP Go page and other knowledge management platform for the Global Network Against Food Crises Team.
  • Assist the Knowledge Management Focal point with the maintenance of a talking points library for the Global Network Team.
  • Assist with the development of high-quality talking points, briefs and reports related to the work of the GNAFC Team.
  • Provide support to the Knowledge Management Focal point in developing and maintaining a repository of internal best practice on the operationalization of the HDP Nexus in WFP.
  • Help to develop a system of knowledge management and capturing of best practice for the Community of Practice of HDP Practitioners through the Inter Agency Standing Committee Task Force
  • Provide support for WFP’s engagement in interagency HDP fora, including knowledge management support for a mapping of HDP Nexus capacities in the DAC-UN Dialogue and work on the delivery of basic social services in IASC Task Force

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled or recently completed (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university with studies in development economics, social sciences, food security, nutrition, political sciences, policy and governance, political economy, development economics, agronomy, sustainable agriculture and natural resources management, social sciences, and related field or proven relevant experience in the above fields and have attended classes in the past 12 months
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English; working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset;
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

REQUIRED SOFT SKILLS/WFP COMPETENCIES

  • Research and analysis skills
  • Basic understanding of HDP nexus approaches and issues
  • Ability to write in a clear and concise manner
  • Knowledge of the UN system and the work of WFP

WORKING LANGUAGES

Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) is required. Knowledge of a second UN official language is ad advantage.

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of Programme and Policy Officer of the Global Network Against Food Crises, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. The Head of Partnerships of the Global Network Against Food Crises will be the second-level supervisor. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Have an understanding of and proficiency in the system of knowledge management in WFP.
  • Be able to articulate WFP and the GNAFC’s position and priorities within multilateral fora.
  • Develop a detailed understanding of ongoing discussions on the operationalization of the HDP Nexus.
  • Assist in creating a comprehensive repository for HDP Nexus best practice
  • Gain experience in engaging in HDP interagency fora, namely the DAC-UN Dialogue, IASC Task Force 4 and the Joint Steering Committee.
  • Orientate the work of WFP and the GNAFC within efforts to address the current global food crisis.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of 1000$ per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
