The Automation Lead Engineer is accountable for the development of an integrated automation system which reflects MRC automation requirements and specifying the design, implementation, and integration of process control system. He fully needs to use his technical knowledge and skills to implement the industry best practices, strategies, and methods to increase overall equipment effectiveness and efficiency. He is responsible for a technical support, automation system inspection, data collection, troubleshooting and reliability implementation.

Environment, Health & Safety

  • Adheres to EHS regulations & guidelines and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Takes reasonable care for his health and safety in the workplace. He must also take reasonable care for the health and safety of others who may be affected by what he does or does not do.
  • Sets job safety procedure standards and maintain safe performance of all work.
  • Always takes appropriate action to maintain the workplace in a clean and tidy manner in line with company standards.
  • Contributes to reporting near misses and incidents as well as site inspection and investigation.
  • Coordinates with EHS team about any action they take to comply with the EHS act or regulations.
  • Conducts employee observations to ensure safety and procedures are being followed and deals with safety issues which are escalated to him

Performance Indicators

  • Overall indicators are EHS KPIs, EHS performance full compliance, zero lost time accident (LTA) or lost time incident (LTI), reporting valid near misses and incidents.

Engineering & Maintenance Support

  • Provides technical support to meeting the operational reliability level specified for the Rolling Mill.
  • Assists Rolling Mill maintenance department to implement site-wide maintenance strategy applying “Lessons Learned”.
  • Assists area engineers by providing advanced troubleshooting capabilities and resolves more complex technical problems to get the system / equipment back in running condition.
  • Assists in the maintenance or emergency repairs inspections and provides technical automation assistance to maintenance superintendent and technicians as assigned.
  • Provides recommendations for preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance for Rolling Mill automation systems.
  • Participates, when assigned, in site inspections and safety, quality or production investigations.
  • Collects and does engineering data analysis, evaluates conceptual engineering plans and prepares & evaluates the designs and plans according to specifications.
  • Conducts chronic Failure Elimination / Root Cause Analysis (RCA) studies as required and tracks / reports the implementation of corrective actions assigned to responsible plant personnel.
  • Reviews technical proposals for outsourced maintenance services, for automation assuring a clear scope of work for routine or down day / shutdown maintenance activities. Oversees automation maintenance services.
  • Ensures that the received data, drawings, and documentation concerning maintenance from project contractor and vendors are complete as per the project contract specifications.
  • Reviews and assists in Reliability Centralized Maintenance (RCM) by assigning equipment criticality rankings, performing failure analysis, and recommending mitigation strategies.
  • Works closely with area engineers, maintenance superintendent and planners to ensure each maintainable automation system / equipment has an optimum maintenance plan and needed spare parts are ordered and stocked and properly levelled.
  • Attends supplier automation integration test, participates in factory acceptance tests and site- based commissioning of automation equipment and system.
  • Proposes revamping projects / capex projects, prepares scope of work and specifications to improve Rolling Mill facility / equipment availability and participates in reviewing, supervising, and implementing the approved projects.
  • Strives in implementing Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Lean Manufacturing (LM) and Reliability Excellence (REX) for automation throughout the Rolling Mill in his designated area.

Leaderships, Training & Coaching

  • Provides on-site, hands-on mentorship to newly hired rolling mill engineers includes training, coaching, and guidance to engineers for execution of work control and maintenance processes.
  • Assists with the recruitment of experienced and competent maintenance engineers and technicians for the rolling mill.
  • Coordinates the training of maintenance personnel at the rolling mill, ensuring their knowledge and application of maintenance best practices.

Performance Indicators

  • Overall indicators are department objectives and KPIs, maintenance strategy assistance, targeted production delay, unplanned downtime decreased meets target objectives, equipment’s availability, conducted RCA for each significant chronic failure, outsourcing maintenance services and having a clear scope of work, all maintainable equipment has an optimum maintenance plan in eAM, initiation of project CAPEXES & implemented in timely manner, TPM, LM & REX are in place.

  • Full monitoring and reporting of the developed KPIs

Continuous Improvement

  • Provide input to direct reports during root cause failure analysis
  • Utilizes problem solving techniques, teamwork building strategies, process control, and continuous improvement tools to meet or exceed the facility key operating statistics.
  • Promote best working practice in all production areas to achieve effectiveness, control, and efficiency.
  • Establish and facilitate departmental procedures which in turn enhance the production and efficiency of the department while supporting safety policies and procedures.
  • Achieve all relevant KPI’s and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Performance Indicators

  • Deliverables improvement opportunities put into effect.
  • Participation in business improvement activities.
  • Continuous uptime improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with established standards and eventual acceptance of the plan.

COMMUNICATIONS and WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Report directly to Maintenance Superintendent. Frequent contacts with immediate associates within own and other departments for project coordination in person.
  • Periodic contacts at next higher level in other departments regarding task review and progress of the project through personal, telephone and email communications.
  • Occasional personal contacts with next higher levels in other departments regarding project presentations.
  • Periodic personal contacts with outside companies for procedures and strategic issues.
  • Keep the head of the Maintenance informed of decisions made and bring to his attention problems and questions requiring his decisions; keep him informed of progress on all the department programs.
  • Makes useful links to arrive at insightful plans and solutions through collaborative approach to others.

JOB RELEVANT INFORMATION (BOUNDARIES and DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY)

  • Directly accountable to the Maintenance Superintendent on the overall equipment effectiveness and efficiency of an integrated automation system and process control system.
  • Works on highly complex and diversified assignments independently within established policies, objectives, professional and technical standards.
  • Work accomplishments are subject to general reviews by his immediate superior.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS

Experience in Rolling Mill

Educational Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering or Control Systems Engineering.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years technical experience in automation field.
  • Experience in handling engineering principles and practices in a rolling mill or relevant industry in automation and instrumentation fields.
  • Attended specialized training in automation for example, Siemens S7, Siemens safety PLC, Simens Drives, Wincc HMI, Siemens TIA.
  • Experience in Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), Distributed Control System (DCS) and Human Machine Interface (HMI), Automated Storage, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV), Programmable Logic Control (PLC), Advance Process Controls (APC), Emergency Shutdown System (ESD), Machine Monitoring and Instrumentation devices.

Skills and Attributes

  • Data gathering techniques for organizing and interpreting data and the ability to accurately compile, interpret and apply a variety of field notes, data tables and other information to engineering problems.
  • Knowledgeable in PdM.
  • Computer proficiency and potential in data management and project planning and performance of engineering functions including but not limited on MS Office software.
  • Managing private contractors in maintenance jobs and projects.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
  • Ability to read and understand technical writing and ability to understand and interpret complex and technical information
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to present research findings in a clear written report form.
  • Maintain the plant process area through CCTV system.

Work Environment

The role may at times involve working unusual hours particularly when issues arise and need to be quickly resolved. The incumbent works in a variety of settings where the noise level ranges from very quiet in the office to extremely loud at job sites. This position routinely encounters, and must endure, significant inclement weather.
