The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an intern position in the Communications, Advocacy and Marketing Division, based in Berlin, Germany.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION:

The Communications, Advocacy and Marketing (CAM) team of the Global Office in Berlin is responsible for the strategic positioning of WFP in the public sphere, in Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. Apart from (social) media relations with top-tier outlets and high-profile supporters, CAM activities include supporting advocacy towards parliament and other key counterparts to advance policy that helps paving the way to zero hunger.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct a daily press and media monitoring.
  • Stay abreast of new developments relating to WFP’s field of work.
  • Keep track of interviews done by the Director and the spokesperson.
  • Maintain a contact list of journalists and media outlets.
  • Support the translation of news releases for the distribution to media.
  • Preparing weekly and monthly highlights on political developments in Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein relevant for the work of WFP.
  • Support compiling talking points for media engagements and events.
  • Support the creation of content for the German-language social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
  • Support the development of new outreach strategies on social media.
  • Implement global WFP social media campaigns and adjust content for the German-speaking market.
  • Work with influencers in the German-speaking market to promote WFP campaigns.
  • Keep the website up to date.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university. Preferred field of study: communication, journalism, political, development, social, or related studies
  • Completed at least two years of undergraduate study
  • Attended courses in the last 12 months (transcripts of records or diploma required)
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in German and English are required. Second UN language and knowledge in digital design would be assets.

WORKING LANGUAGES

Working knowledge of English and German (proficiency/level C) is required.

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of a Communications Officer, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be an elemental part of the supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a fully integrated member of the CAM team in Berlin.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Have developed an understanding of WFP’s mandate and work
  • Be comfortable posting creative content on WFP’s social channels
  • Have developed an understanding of BER’s outreach via the different communication channels
  • Be familiar with the key advocacy asks of WFP in the current political environment

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
