The job of a chemotherapy technician is to prepare and administer chemotherapy medication to patients, usually as part of a cancer treatment plan. Someone in this role may manage supplies, stock inventory, purchase additional supplies when necessary, and create admixtures under the supervision of a senior pharmacist. Chemotherapy chemicals are hazardous, so this job may involve using closed system transfer devices, robots, and personal protective equipment. The primary qualifications for becoming a chemotherapy technician are a high school diploma and on the job training, although many employers prefer candidates with a pharmacy technician certification.
