Communications Officer

Role & Responsibilities:

This role will be responsible for producing written and visual communication materials for both local and international audiences for the Jordan country programme. The role will also support the Programme Funding Manager to facilitate relevant and timely information for Medair’s communication and fundraising activities to generate awareness and support for Medair’s work in Jordan. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, capable of managing an exciting workload and be a creative communicator with professional experience and skills in communications, PR, media or a related field.

Project Overview:

Medair has been operational in Jordan in response to the Syrian crisis since 2012. Medair operates in the areas of health, social protection and psychosocial support programming and adopts a One Refugee approach, targeting both Syrian and non-Syrian refugees as well as vulnerable Jordanians residing in Amman, Mafraq, Irbid and Zarqa.

Workplace & Conditions:

Field based position in Amman, Jordan with frequent travel to other governorates.

Starting Date / Initial Contract Details :

February 2023: 11-month contract pending funding confirmation.

Key Activity Areas

Marketing & Relationships and Affiliate Resources

  • Travel frequently to field sites to proactively and reactively gather and pitch resources and updates on programmes and projects.
  • Support the Programme Funding Manager by gathering and adapting materials for donors, affiliate offices, and the engagement team (photos, videos, testimonies, facts, stories, quotes, reports, etc.).
  • Coordinate swift approval at field level of marketing and relationships material before publication.
  • Help to prepare, facilitate, and accompany field visits for photographers, journalists, or media crews.

Digital Social Media & Public Relations

  • Assist the Programme Funding Manager to analyse media opportunities, produce press releases, and brief staff ahead of interviews.
  • Produce and promote short content updates to be posted on Medair’s website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
  • Support Medair’s Global Support Office in maintaining relations with online social media users and fans.
  • Train and encourage field staff on using social media and actively monitor social media platforms for content to engage with.
  • Capture and edit photos/videos for content creation and donor visibility and upload to Medair’s photo library.

Field Visibility and Reporting

  • Assist the Programme Funding Manager in procuring donor field visibility items that meet Medair and donor guidelines.
  • Raise awareness about visibility and branding in team trainings and meetings and ensure that Medair staff, facilities and equipment have access to Medair branded items.
  • Managing records for tracking stories, published materials, and visibility items for donor for reporting.

Other Duties

  • Support the Programme Funding Manager with administrative tasks, including but not limited to updating donor visibility tracking sheets and uploading and filing consent forms and photos.
  • Support the Programme Funding Manager and Project Managers in developing communications plans for new programme grants at proposal stage and ensuring timely delivery throughout the project cycle.
  • Develop resources for Medair’s Global Support Office including campaigns, marketing, annual reports, gift handles and First Stop documents.
  • Contribute to and produce internal communications including the staff newsletter and other reports.
  • Assist the Programme Funding Manager with donor reporting as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate/postgraduate/professional qualification in Communications, Fundraising, PR, Media, Marketing or a related field.
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook and online social media platforms, tools and techniques. Training or experience in multi-media production and editing desirable.
  • Fluent written and spoken Arabic (native)
  • Fluent written and spoken English (professional)

  • Excellent writing skills in both English and Arabic with the ability to target specific audiences.
  • Highly organised with a creative flair and good attention to detail.
  • Strong photography skills for photographing beneficiaries and staff working in the field.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Able to develop and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, beneficiaries, and local authorities.
  • Passion for and understanding of humanitarian issues.
  • Ability to relate well and establish trust with diverse populations.
  • Ability to identify, develop and document interesting and engaging stories.
  • Excellent communicator and good listener, able to pass on information efficiently.
  • Strong character traits, including cultural and gender sensitivity, adaptability, ability to handle stress, willingness to travel to the field frequently.
