Job Brief
Legal writers produce a wide range of written materials for the legal industry. From legal newsletters, brochures, and marketing copy to feature articles, web content, legal blogs news reports and attorney profiles, legal writing can take many forms. In this position, you will have the ability to exercise your skills in legal research, editing, and writing. The most important things to bring to this position are a willingness to learn, wanting to see projects through to the finish line, and a Sherlock Holmes eye for detail.
Legal Writer Responsibilities
- Work Remote
- Identify relevant legal authority to support statements of law.
- Edit and proofread legal writing to get it “publication ready”.
- Conduct discrete legal research projects across diverse legal topics.
- Drafting and editing complex information.
- Identifying and interviewing expert sources.
Legal Writer Education Requirements
- Legal writers are required to have a minimum of a high school diploma to obtain work in the legal writing and publishing field although a bachelor’s degree in English, writing, journalism, communications or a related field is often preferred.
- Juris Doctorate degree or paralegal certification.
- Demonstrated ability to edit, revise, and update material accurately and thoroughly in assigned substantive areas.
- Excellent legal research skills including the use of electronic online research tools, such as Westlaw and Lexis, and citation verification programs.
- Excellent writing skills; strong editing skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy and ability to clearly and effectively communicate legal developments in writing and verbally.
- Ability to adapt writing style to meet CEB guidelines for all delivery formats.
- Excellent analytical skills; demonstrated command of the English language.
- Highly effective communication and collaboration skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team both within the existing department, in other departments, and outside of CEB.
- Ability to be flexible and proactive.
- Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to effectively manage time, work in an organized and detailed manner to meet tight deadlines, keep accurate records, and produce desired results.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to navigate and participate effectively in social media websites.
- Proficient in standard personal computer applications such as MS Office applications (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel), Westlaw, Lexis, and cite checking programs.
- Ability to independently utilize all standard computer hardware and multiple software applications simultaneously.
