The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill an Environmental Sustainability Intern position in our Environmental Unit of the Management Services Division, based in Rome, Italy.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL UNIT:

The Environmental Unit within the Management Services division helps Country Offices and Headquarters mainstream environmental management across WFP operations. Current focus areas include reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing and properly managing waste, reducing water consumption, promoting sustainable procurement decisions, and increasing staff awareness around environmental management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Advisor, the candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Participate as part of a small project team, contributing to WFP’s annual environmental footprint reporting exercise, supporting the collection, review, analysis, and reporting of data from WFP global operations.
  • Liaise with Country Offices to assist in the collection and analysis of energy usage, water consumption and waste generation data for calculating WFP’s environmental footprint.
  • Utilise the ARCHIBUS facilities management software to store and analyse collected data.
  • Support the team with the analysis and presentation of environmental data using an existing Tableau dashboard.
  • Contribute to the development of awareness raising materials, case studies, articles, newsletters and other published material through desktop research, primary data collection and document drafting.
  • Maintain the team’s communication repository on WFP’s intranet.
  • Support the maintenance of WFP’s Environmental Actions Database and provide input to enhance and improve recording processes and procedures.
  • Support WFP’s involvement in UN inter-agency working groups activities as requested.
  • Contribute to other environmental initiatives undertaken by the team as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Economics, Environmental Management, or a related field from a recognized university.
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months.
  • Ability to work with large datasets in MS Office.
  • Experience in data management, and visual analytics (e.g. Tableau, MS Excel).
  • Experience in developing awareness-raising and communication content.
  • Experience in GHG accounting and environmental data analysis is an asset.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Strong analytical and data management skills; able to collect, organize, analyze, and visually present significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Comfortable in a rapidly changing environment, with competing and shifting priorities.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals.

WORKING LANGUAGES

  • Written and oral proficiency in English is essential – written, spoken, oral comprehension – and the presentation of information (proficiency/level C).
  • Intermediate knowledge of another WFP official language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish or WFP’s working language Portuguese) is desirable.

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Sustainability Advisor the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be an elemental part of the supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and the assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should have:

  • General overview of WFP’s environmental data collection and reporting process.
  • General overview of WFP’s environmental initiatives and improvement actions.
  • Good understanding of WFP’s environmental footprint data and methodology for calculating yearly GHG emissions.
  • Familiarity with the Facilities Management database (ARCHIBUS), and WFP’s environmental data interactive portfolio.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  • Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
  • WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
  • WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
  • WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
  • Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
