ABOUT WFP

GLOBAL FLEET

WFP owns, leases and globally operates more than 1,000 trucks of different configurations, trailers, all-terrain vehicles and workshop facilities throughout 28 Country Offices (COs). The WFP fleet is deployed to fill critical gaps in local transport capacity and stabilize transport rates in the event of increased insecurity and/or sudden growth in demand, as well as pioneer new routes that, due to prevailing insecurity, would remain inaccessible to local transporters. The Global Fleet unit provides a range of fleet services, such as the corporate fleet management- and vehicle tracking systems, and the deployment of specialists for Fleet Management, Workshop Management or Specialised Mechanics.

In South Sudan WFP is operating a fleet of over 70 amphibian ATVs to facilitate food deliveries to remote areas in Al-Sudd, one of the biggest swamps in the world. This specialised fleet will now be expanded by Aquatic Shredders and potentially by other Aquatic Machines like aquatic weed harvesters, aquatic weed pullers, etc., to open water ways and clear water from floating plants, which are an obstacle to boat traffic and food dispatch.

JOB PURPOSE

The All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) and Aquatic Machine Specialist will be in charge of servicing, maintaining and repairing a fleet of 72 ATVs and 2 Acquatic Shredders, and other related equipment in a safe, efficient and economical mannter, deploying requisite skills and expertise. He/she will be expected to work at the highest standards without close supervision to achieve an acceptable level of work throughout, whilst always maintaining quality standards in accordance with the established procedures and normative guidelines as set in the Logistics Fleet Manual.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under the general supervision of the Head of Logistics, the incumbent shall perform the following duties:

  • Examine, inspect & report thoroughly on the condition, road worthiness/seaworthiness or safety of any vehicle, aquatic machine, or equipment, including functional testing & the application of computerized service & diagnostic techniques.
  • Service, maintain and repair ATVs & Aquatic Machines, equipment or components utilizing the necessary tools, equipment & facilities in a safe manner within the standard job times defined by the vehicle / equipment manufacturer.
  • Interpret & implement technical service data & statutory maintenance standards to ensure that all work performed is in accordance with minimum requirements defined.
  • Recovery of broken down or immobilised ATVs, Aquatic Machines, and equipment, utilising proper techniques to minimise the risk of additional damage without causing any danger to the public.
  • Apply the organisations policies in respect to maintenance practices & standards to ensure that these are fully implemented & that maximum benefit is obtained in terms of equipment availability & minimizing costs.
  • Apply in a logical & progressive manner the appropriate diagnostic techniques to determine the cause or causes of reported malfunctions in ATVs, Aquatic Machines, components, or systems. Also including recommendations for improvements & modifications designed to enhance safety & reliability.
  • Use safe working practices & procedures at all times & in particular to comply with the organisations health & safety at work policy. Including the wearing of protective clothing & consideration for the environment.
  • Maintain the ATV’s on-board equipment, such as boats, engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, and life preservers.
  • Maintain Aquatic Machines such as Shredders as per the owner manual recommendations and maintain engine, hull, hydraulic system, cutter blades, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, bilge pumps, and life preservers of Aquatic Shredders.
  • Train operators and mechanics on amphibian ATVs & Aquatic Machines such as Aquatic Weed Shredders.
  • Measure depths of water, using depth-measuring equipment.
  • Loss or damage of Cargo, Spares, tools, or Equipment as well as Loss of Fuel in the care of the employee shall be deducted from the salary based on CIF value or Local Market Rate, whichever is prevailing. This can also lead to penalties or dismissal to the Personnel and penalties on the Service Provider or Contractor.
  • Share experiences gained with other staff members & strive towards creating good team building & harmonious atmosphere.
  • Travel as required by the organisation & perform any other duties as requested by immediate supervisor.

STANDARD MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • High school graduate. Completed “A” Levels/ Secondary School in Mathematics and English as main subjects.
  • Completed a full course at technical college, or similar institution in Auto Mechanics with experience gained in both light and heavy vehicles.
  • Constantly updated and taken regular technical training refresher courses, with preference to Generators, Boats and ATVs.

Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years of demonstrable relevant maintenance experience.
  • Held the position of Mechanic or similar job in a Company/NGO with at least 3 years’ experience gained in the relevant field.
  • Hold a full driving licence for all the categories of vehicle on which employed. This includes HGV (Heavy Goods vehicles) licence of the appropriate type were employed on HGV repairs and maintenance.

Language

  • Proficiency in English. Fluency in Arabic is desirable.
