BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The United Nations World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change. To be effective in this mandate, WFP must ensure that it reaches the right people and that it manages its relationship with those individuals and their communities in a responsible, accountable and effective manner.
The Research, Assessment and Monitoring (RAM) Division aims to provide credible, relevant and timely evidence that forms the basis for the design of WFP operations and the measurement of outcomes and impact. In doing so, RAM provides the necessary information for strategic and operational decision-making, resource mobilization and accountability to beneficiaries.
The Communications Lead will report directly to WFP’s Chief Economist and Director of RAM, delivering the communications priorities of RAM’s Front Office while managing communications collaboration and initiatives across the division. Her/his key responsibilities include providing support to the Director, developing a divisional communications strategy, refreshing RAM’s brand, embedding communications within divisional projects, and developing impactful content for the division’s identified priorities.
ACCOUNTABITLITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategy
- Lead the development of a divisional communications strategy, including a refresh of RAM’s dual brand and identity.
- Identify dissemination opportunities to expand RAM’s visibility and advocacy.
- Help amplify RAM initiatives ranging from capacity development, information management, partnerships, donor engagement, etc.
- Act as a strategic liaison with counterparts in other HQ divisions/departments and relevant offices.
Implementation and Development
- Organize a dedicated communications working group for the division.
- Identify and establish communications touch points between RAM colleagues globally, with a focus on building connections with RAM officers in RBs and COs.
- Pilot new channels and initiatives to expand RAM’s visibility internally and externally.
- Manage the roll-out of RAM’s communications strategy and identified priorities.
Content Development
- Design unique content for the Chief Economist’s social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.).
- Develop material reflective of the tone and style of the Chief Economist, ranging from presentations, ghostwriting, multimedia assets, factsheets, briefing notes, talking points, etc.
- Build oversight of RAM projects and priorities, identifying key messages that inform RAM’s monthly external and internal communications initiatives.
- Establish shared resources and infrastructure for communications focal points and relevant collaborators, including access to design platforms, services and tools.
- Design engaging presentations and marketing materials within tight turnarounds.
- Manage, develop and curate content for RAM’s internal and external platforms.
Divisional Initiatives
- Provide ad hoc communications support to Divisional Leadership and RAM HQ Units for key initiatives, events, presentations, and engagements.
- Support the design and development for RAM products including platforms such as WFP’s DataViz and the HungerMapLIVE – support ranging from UI/UX design, web design and graphic design for system mock-ups and user experience testing.
- Coordinate communications staff in RAM’s Hunger Monitoring Unit to support the:
- Development of recurring and engaging content (written, audio, visual) across Unit channels (social media, blogs, internal and external platforms)
- Unit’s external site refresh
- Weekly production and dissemination of products such as the Insights and Key Trends, newsletter and real-time food security data analysis.
- Development, design and dissemination of flagship products and/or reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
Completion of advanced master’s education and a university degree (Bachelor’s degree) in Social Sciences, Humanities, Journalism, International Relations, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing or other relevant fields.
Experience:
The candidate must have at least 3 years of progressively responsible national and international experience in a data-centric communications position, alongside experience in content development (audio, video, graphic) and data storytelling (including analysis, visualization and design). Experience with the United Nations and World Food Programme or within the field of research, assessment, monitoring is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Proven and advanced data storytelling skills to develop engaging communications materials, including PowerPoint presentations and multi-medium assets.
- Proven and advanced skills in communicating highly technical ideas and products to a variety of audiences.
- Knowledge of humanitarian assistance, emergency relief and related humanitarian issues.
- Advanced skills in delivering complex communications projects in their entirety, with hands-on responsibility over the project’s development, design, production and dissemination
- Proven and advanced graphic design and audio/visual production skills, including proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and complementary creative platforms.
- Ability to perform data analyses to identify emerging stories and messages, translating the analyses to visualizations, written insights and other materials.
- Good understanding of UI/UX principles in the context of data communications and data-driven product design.
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS and WordPress.
- Ability to design, develop and implement new strategies with consultation and in collaboration with colleagues and potential partners.
- Ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work on tight deadlines
- Self-motivated and able to work with a certain degree of autonomy and/ or in team;
- Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.
Languages:
Fluency in both oral and written communication in English.
