Program / Department Summary
The Mercy Corps Finance Department is responsible for all financial functions in the office, including accounting, payments and banking, payroll, budgeting, financial reporting, and grant financial management and compliance. The Mercy Corps Finance Department ensures compliance with donor regulations as well as Mercy Corps’ internal policies and procedures. In its role as a support to the Program Department, the Finance Department provides timely reports and assistance to the Country Director and the Program team to ensure that financial resources are used efficiently and effectively.
General Position Summary
Working in the Finance Department under the direction of the Accounting Manager , the Assistant for General Accounts will ensure the accuracy and completeness of Mercy Corps accounting records and will primary assist in managing the monthly accounting cycles.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Prepare checks or wire transfer requests based on fully approved documents and present to approved check-signers for review and signature.
- Serve as a custodian of safe box, check books, vouchers and other finance documents/archives
- Managing the petty cash to ensure compliance with the cash management policy and maintain the proper level of available cash in the safe.
- Managing and updating the finance register (inbox/outbox) for any document submitted to finance department.
- Maintaining proper filing system for all finance vouchers both soft and hard copies as per Mercy Corps standard procedures and policies.
- Enter all cash and bank transactions to accounting system.
- Maintain finance share folder files.
- Provide support in the preparation of month-end close out .
- Provide the required assistant to the Finance Officer so that any pending payments are cleared/processed on time with customer focused or service mindset
- Any other similar duties as above as reasonably assigned by the supervisor Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy Corps and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.

Accountability
Reports Directly To: Accounting Manager
Works Directly With: Other Finance Team members, Program Manager/Officers, Operations Manager /Officers, HR/Admin Officers, Logistic/ Transport Officers
Knowledge and Experience
- 1-2 of accounting experience is required. (Fresh graduates are welcome to apply).
- A university degree in accounting/finance or relevant filed is required.
- Familiarity with computerized, double-entry accounting software.
- Advanced computer skills in MS Office programs, particularly Excel
- Good organizational skills as well as attention to details.
- Excellent oral and written English and Arabic skills.
- Reporting skills, and computer skills are required
Success Factors
A clear understanding of finance and procurement ethics as well as the willingness and ability to enforce compliance with Mercy Corps and donor policies and procedures is essential. The ability to interact effectively with international and national staff members is required. A demonstrated ability to work quickly, accurately, meet deadlines, and process information in support of changing program activities is necessary.
Living Conditions / Environmental Conditions
Mercy Corps team members represent the agency both during and outside work hours when deployed in a field posting or on a visit/TDY to a field posting. Team members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
