ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide. WFP Technology Division (TEC, formerly known as IT) is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations, be they man made or in a natural disaster setting. TEC Division continues to increase its activities to meet the constantly growing demand from the organization and implement the initiatives related to information and technology.

Cash Based Transfers is a pillar is WFP’s assistance to vulnerable populations. Data generated by WFP’s operations is key to supporting activities and stretching donations to meet growing demands. Currently, a main technology platform uses SAP HANA for business intelligence. A Data Analyst is required to support requests, troubleshoot issues, review business logic, validate transformations and work with our vendor to manage the escalation backlogs and close request tickets.

Combining expert knowledge of SAP HANA, data integration and Tableau, and functional knowledge of Cash Based Transfers, the incumbent will report to the SCOPE Business Intelligence Service Manager. The main goals of this role are to generate and communicate data-driven analyses and insights in support of decision-making processes.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Source System:

  • Understand the data schema of the source system (SCOPE) and the replica database.
  • Work with the database administrators to troubleshoot potential issues between the replica database and SAP HANA instances.
  • Recommend remedial actions and follow-up to ensure activities are completed.

SAP HANA Instances:

  • Review and develop a thorough understanding of the SAP HANA instances for SCOPE and the underlying data models.
  • Understand the WFP terminology associated with Cash Based Transfers and ensure standard terminology is used in SAP HANA instances.
  • Support a standard process for receiving end-user requests and incidents, triaging, initial root cause analysis, escalation to LTA vendors and SCOPE team and closure.
  • Receive requests and incidents and triage appropriately. Where possible, resolve requests and incidents (otherwise escalate)
  • Together with SCOPE BI Manager, analyse and troubleshoot incidents.
  • For Change Requests, escalate requests to LTA vendor and SCOPE BI Manager for estimations.
  • Review LTA vendor estimates, business logic and analysis to optimize quality and proper approach to resolving incidents and implementing change requests.
  • Where required, implement fixes and changes as required.
  • Support business validation process, as required.
  • Support and provide expert advice for business continuity planning and SCOPE BI roadmap discussions/plans.
  • Ensure alignment on key figures so that analyst teams are using the right data for their reporting requirements.

Data Integration:

  • Troubleshoot integration issues between SAP HANA and DOTS, API Gateway, Tableau and SCOPE systems.
  • Ensure the endpoints for each system is monitored and available.
  • Provide recommendations to system teams.

DELIVERABLES:

  1. Provide expert advice on the data model and business logic used in SCOPE SAP Hana instances to support end-user requests and incidents.
  2. Provide 1st level support and triaging for new SCOPE BI requests/incidents and make informed decisions to escalate ticket to other teams. Follow-up to ensure closure of tickets.
  3. Review and provide recommendations for optimizing data models in SCOPE SAP HANA instances. Look for re-factoring opportunities to increase the business value of the HANA instances.
  4. Provide data analysis and validation for change requests and fixes to ensure key figures are properly managed and shared.
  5. Troubleshoot integration issues with system and business focal points
  6. Mentor and coach junior data analysts not familiar with the underlying data models and logic to assist in the maturing of their capabilities related to the Cash Based Assistance data domain.
  7. Develop and implement various analysis, reporting and quality control capabilities
  8. Assist in the development of business continuity plan and SCOPE HANA product roadmap

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in computer science, data science, analytics, statistics, information management, public administration, management or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, information management, statistics, project management, stakeholder management or related area is required With at least 5 years of relevant and progressively more responsible work in Enterprise Architecture especially with SAP, and/or data analysis.
  • Required:
    • 2 or more years of experience with database or programming languages (SQL, Python)
    • 2 or more years of architecture and data modelling experience with SAP HANA.
  • Desirable: Experience with PySpark. 2+ years architecture experience with cloud-based application databases and replica databases. 2+ years’ experience with Cash Based Transfers analysis (highly desirable: WFP Cash Based Transfers analysis experience)

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

  • Working level knowledge of self-service analytics and data visualization applications (MS PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau or similar),
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, manage, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy. The ability to analyse, model and interpret data in support of decision-making, and convey information succinctly to management. Adept at queries, report writing and presenting findings. Ability to quality-check work completed by other team members.
  • Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
  • Proven skills in working towards a common goal in a team of diverse skills, experience and cultural backgrounds, with heavy emphasis towards business and non-technical team members. Particularly important is the ability to work remotely and continue to ensure alignment on activities and goals.

Language:

  • Fluency in oral and written English with an intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is desirable.
