1. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
Under the supervision of the Regional Communications Officer for western Africa, the Communications consultant will be responsible to develop, plan and implement communications activities that support the corporate communications strategy and WFP objectives and to maintain a high profile for WFP among French media and through development and management of a content strategy for all owned French digital channels.
2. ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, manage and evaluate communications campaigns that positively impact and raise WFP’s profile and support fundraising activities in French speaking markets.
- Maintain and develop a contact list of journalists and media outlets and manage the regular flow of news/information about WFP’s work to the French and wider francophone media, ensuring reputational risks are identified and managed.
- Give interviews to the media.
- Define a social media plan which leverages social media content, platforms, networks and partners to enhance coverage and support of WFP’s activities in French.
- Maintain and update the French version of the WFP Corporate website and the Corporate Social media Accounts in French including Twitter, Facebook, and Medium.
- Generate and/or facilitate the production of content in French, including, text, photos, videos and audio for use across a range of integrated online platforms, in order to support global and regional fundraising activities, ensuring consistency with corporate messages.
- Track and analyze traditional and online media, to identify trends, and propose solutions and ideas to improve the effectiveness of the communication strategy and activities.
- Support the Senior Communications Officer to provide messaging guidance on WFP’s key narratives with a focus, but not exclusively, on French-speaking countries in west and central Africa.
- Provide strategic communications support such as drafting a comms and/ or advocacy plans to support specific activities including emergency response.
- Support RBD CAM unit develop and maintain partnerships through extensive networking and proactive collaboration with influencers and opinion formers whose support is essential to achieving WFP objectives, with emphasis on French-speaking markets.
- Seize opportunities for WFP’s thought leadership on food security and nutrition with tactics and messaging to impact appropriate audiences in the region.
- Backstop in the absence of the Regional CAM Lead.
- Other duties as required.
3. DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
- Proper communication and visibility programme prepared, coordinated and implemented.
4. QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, International Relations, International Development, Business Administration and or any other relevant field.
Experience:
5 years of professional work experience in communications or in humanitarian and development sector
Knowledge & Skills
- Experience in the implementation of work plans in communication and partnerships function area.
- Ability to network and to maintain effective relationships with external partners – member states, UN agencies, NGOs, host and other partners.
- Experience in guiding and supervising more junior staff, supporting them with more complex analysis and queries.
- Understanding of the local context.
- Good communications and writing skills.
- Ability to negotiate.
Languages:
Working knowledge (proficiency/Level C) of French and English is required.
