BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian agency, saving lives in emergencies and changing lives for millions through sustainable development. WFP works in more than 120 countries and territories around the world, feeding people caught in conflict and disasters, and laying the foundations for a better future.

WFP produces a wide range of publications (including policy papers, fact sheets and reports, some of which entail partnerships with other organizations) and editorial products (including stories and website content) that help position WFP vis-à-vis key external audiences, including, but not limited to, donors.

The Communications, Advocacy and Marketing Division (CAM) in WFP is looking to set up a roster of stand-by writers/editors, reporting to the Head of the Editorial team, to undertake writing projects, edit materials to the highest standards and/or support the ongoing work of the Editorial team as required.

ACCOUNTABITLITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Project manage major WFP external publications, including but not limited to, flagship reports;
  • Management of report research and the compiling of relevant information and data;
  • Responsible for writing highest-standard copy (including reports, fact sheets and web content) and for meticulous fact-checking;
  • Define and produce content outlines and concept notes;
  • Lead collegiate efforts to seek input, feedback and clearance from key high-level stakeholders, including senior WFP leadership, donor representatives and other UN agencies;
  • Accountable for editing copy swiftly and with a high level of accuracy.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

By the end of the assignment the consultant will have:

  • Fully delivered publications/reports/editorial content to the highest standards for a variety of key audiences including, but not limited to, WFP donors and other key stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:

Advanced University degree in English, English Literature, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, International Relations or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.

Experience:

At least 8 years of relevant professional experience with developing, writing and

producing editorial reports, policy documents, copy and corporate communications products to engage various audiences, with a special focus on donors.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Extensive experience developing, writing and producing institutional publications and other content to a high standard;
  • Experience working with leading humanitarian and development agencies – either UN or international NGOs – as clients;
  • Ability to translate technical language and organizational messaging into clear and compelling copy with a distinct brand voice;
  • Ability to manage projects and meet tight deadlines consistently;
  • Ability to work independently and under minimal supervision;
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills; ability to scan, analyse and interpret information and to summarize complex issues, and tailor communications to different audiences and cultures;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish effective working relationships with people in a multicultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity;
  • Working knowledge of MS Office tools.

Languages: Excellent knowledge of English (level C) is required. An intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is a plus.
