REPORT TO: Regional Data Coordinator
DURATION OF CONTRACT: 1 year, renewable

Note: Egyptian nationals/citizens or candidates with valid Egyptian work permit / residency are eligible to apply. This vacancy will also be used to build a roster for similar positions in WFP Egypt.

JOB PURPOSE

WFP Technology Division (TEC, formerly known as the IT Division) is the digital business engine of the World Food Programme, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations. Technology and connectivity are rapidly reaching some of the most vulnerable people and places affected by crisis, but they are also increasingly expanding to the services responding to those same crises. As one of the main humanitarian actors, WFP has the opportunity and the obligation to leverage data and technology to better know and serve those in need by digitally transforming the way it works.

As one of the main humanitarian actors, the World Food Programme (WFP) has the opportunity and the obligation to leverage data and technology to better know and serve those in need by digitally transforming the way it works. Such ambition led to a plan aimed at establishing, integrating, and mainstreaming the core elements of an end-to-end digital business process.

The job holder will be based and working for WFP Regional Bureau for East and Central Africa (RBC) which is located in Cairo. RBC provides strategic direction, technical guidance, resource mobilization and management support to WFP operations and activities in 16 countries: Algeria, Armenia, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Yemen. The job holder will be part of Data Service Team, within RBC TEC Unit, contributing in the delivery and implementation of data integration, analysis and visualization projects across field operations within RBC region.

The job holder is expected to also be able to both deliver advanced training on tools like Tableau, contribute to data virtualization projects, drive data quality and governance efforts and to provide technical support on data analysis to business units in an efficient and timely manner

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

Under supervision/guidance of the Regional Data Coordinator and within delegated authority, Data Analysis Associate will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Contributes to the preparation of reports based on organizational needs and requirements for reporting and analysis
  • Supports more senior staff in their work on process improvement mechanisms
  • Contributes to the preparation of data sets, being responsible for the acquisition and initial cleaning of data from primary and secondary data systems and documents data sets used.
  • Contributes to the creation and maintenance of databases, contributes to data collection projects, products, tools and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices.
  • Contributes to the identification and analysis of patterns in data sets using various methods
  • Prepares data sets upon request; responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages.
  • Train end users on delivered analytical tools and dashboards to ensure knowledge handover to relevant business teams;
  • Provides technical support on data storage structures, integration, data cleansing and data visualization best practices to business units;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Technical Expertise Continuously updates one’s own knowledge about new technologies and product modifications; Is sought out for advice/expertise and recognized internally as an important technical reference.
Requirement Definition & Management Asks meaningful and appropriate questions to understand and translate business requirements into desired technical functionality.
System Design Able to analyze broad product/service functionality to coordinate design of new technology or assist in technology integration/enhancements.
Solution Development Designs, codes, tests, corrects, and documents programs from supplied specifications, using agreed standards and tools.

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Sciences, Information Systems, Data Management, Electrical/Computer Engineering or another related functional area.

Experience:

6 years of experience in the area of data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information / data management, data visualization project, web management or related area.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Proven experience working in a busy analytical environment and handling complex analysis.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills. Experience working with teams and team processes.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural and multi-ethic environments.
  • The candidate must demonstrate strong data analysis skills
  • Comprehensive analytical skills and advanced level of knowledge in application such as Microsoft package and any of the following tools: Palantir Foundry, Tableau, PowerBI, Python, PySpark, R, Excel. Sound knowledge of Relational Database (MS-SQL, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, etc.).

Languages:

  • Fluency in both oral and written communication in the UN language in use at the duty station (English and Arabic).
