BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The Emergency Operations Division (EME) steers WFP in emergency operations and supports the organization across functions, its Regional Bureaus, and Country Offices, and engages externally with governments and partners. OPweb is the information hub for WFP emergency operations. It shows daily updates, live interactive maps, funding requirements and up-to-date figures:
- Country Briefs and Situation Reports – A quick guide to the latest situation in a country with key numbers, funding requirements and details on the WFP response.
- Live interactive maps – All the latest maps showing natural disasters, food insecurity, displacement and operational highlights.
- Daily operational updates –A quick update on what’s happened in the last 24 hours, or sign up to receive the Daily Operational Brief.
- Emergency dashboards – A visual representation of a WFP emergency response with maps and graphs showing WFP’s operation.
- Guidelines & templates – All the tools needed for implementing emergency preparedness and response activities.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Head of the Digital Transformation Team, the candidate will:
- Develop the software to implement the architecture of the IT solution and respect the data model behind it following IT Solution Architect’s recommendation;
- Ensure the high technical quality of IT solutions and compliance with WFP standards (security, user interface, automation etc.);
- Prepare high-level effort estimations for the development and maintenance of IT solutions;
- Support the Product Manager and the IT Solution Architect with Backlog grooming;
- Review and approve prioritised Backlog tickets for their inclusion in Sprints looking at completeness, clarity, conciseness, visual representation, dependencies, test data availability, behaviour-driven development (BDD) test scenarios, and such;
- Create technical tickets required to ensure the high quality of the IT solution;
- Collaborate on designing and maintaining the software libraries stack;
- Collaborate on maintaining the continuous improvement (CI) and continuous deployment (CD) infrastructure;
- Create an inspiring team environment with an open communication culture;
- Other duties related to software development, as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
University degree or a post-secondary education combined with a minimum of 8 years of equivalent working experience in software development or other related fields.
Experience:
At least 8 years of professional working experience in software architecture and development.
Knowledge and Skills:
In-depth knowledge and proficiency with solution architecture, developing high-quality IT solutions, web technologies ReactJS and .NET development stacks, Git versioning system, and GitFlow, Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD), Agile Scrum, and mainstream software design & development methodologies; and
- Understanding of accessibility, security compliance, design principles behind a scalable IT solution, and the differences between delivery platforms, such as mobile vs desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform.
- Deep knowledge of Lambda functions, ECS fargate, EC2, RDS
- Good knowledge, in general, of AWS and Elastic search
- Good Knowledge of Azure DevOps
- Expertise and experience in Mapbox and/or Leaflet libraries are desirable
