Communications Consultant

Job Title: Communications Consultant; Global Office Canada, Ottawa

The United Nations World Food Programme is the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. WFP is seeking to fill the position of Communications Consultant for WFP’s Global Office in Canada. The target start date for this position is January 4, 2023, with the successful candidate working from the WFP office in Ottawa, Canada.

JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of the assignment is to support the development and implementation of a communication strategy for WFP Global Office Canada to meet its positioning, partnering and resourcing objectives with various audiences within Canada.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following: (1) represent WFP in Ottawa as the communications focal point with media supporting the work of the Global Office’s priorities with Canadian stakeholders; (2) establish new communication products for new audiences and existing partnerships; (3) increase WFP communications across Canada; (4) maintain WFP presence within Canadian traditional media and expand WFP presence in French language media and (4) increase engagement with key media influencers.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Support the development and implementation of a communication strategy for Global Office Canada.
  2. Provide Global Office Canada with current WFP Global messaging for senior leadership decision making for Canadian priorities.
  3. Implement WFP’s Global Digital Campaigns relevant to the Global Office Canada mandate.
  4. Promote WFP to key media outlets in Canada for national, provincial, and local coverage.
  5. Maintain relationships with key media stakeholders and develop new relationships in line with Global Office Canada communications strategy.
  6. Be the relationship driver for WFP’s goodwill ambassadors, including the development of and implementation of an annual plan approved by senior leadership.
  7. Share WFP annual and advocacy reports with key Canadian influencers that will use the data for further media outreach.
  8. Engage with WFP HQ and Country Offices for Global Affairs Canada and other partner visibility requirements and provide them with regular visibility updates.
  9. Be the relationship driver for communications political staff, supporting the Global Office Canada Director in her relationships with political staff.
  10. Participate actively in Global Office Canada weekly meetings, quarterly reviews and retreats.
  11. Provide communications messaging to Private Sector partners.
  12. Promote individual and foundation giving in line with WFP HQ strategy.
  13. Track and monitor engagement with journalists and media outlets on a weekly basis.
  14. Integrate a gender equality lens in all communication materials.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Development or other related field OR at least 8-10 years of work experience in communications.
  • Excellent command of English language.
  • Ideal candidate has minimum B level command of French language.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
  • Proven experience with corporate traditional and social media.

  • Understanding of Canadian values and bilingualism.

Work experience with WFP or a UN agency is an asset.

  1. Canadian nationals holding a valid passport and/or identity card.
  2. Non-Canadian citizens holding a valid Resident Permit to work and live in the country.
  3. Located within commuting distance of WFP Ottawa Office at start date (January 4, 2023).
