BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The Global Network against Food Crises (GNFC) was launched at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit by the European Union, FAO and WFP with the objective of tackling the root causes of food crises and promoting sustainable solutions through shared analysis and knowledge and strengthened coordination in evidence-based responses. The GNFC is an active member of the Fighting Food Crises along the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) Nexus Coalition, which emerged through the UN Food Systems Summit (FSS), held in September 2021. The Coalition seeks to advance HDP Nexus approaches in the context of food crises and has a wide membership from among UN organisations, NGOs, civil society and research institutions, as well as member states and regional organisations.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. The Senior Coordinator & Partnerships & Advocacy Lead will be the second-level supervisor.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Build, maintain and leverage the Coalition’s membership in support of the group’s ambitions, including as part of member-led workstreams.
  2. Lead support to the Coalition’s three workstreams with the preparation and organization of meetings and events and substantive research on key areas of work.
  3. Support the development and implementation of workplans to realise the Coalition’s priorities and ensure appropriate reporting.
  4. Represent Coalition co-leads with external actors in relevant meetings and fora.
  5. Actively engage with and support the development and implementation of a communications strategy for the Coalition, including written communications, quarterly updates, web and social media.
  6. Lead the drafting and editing of relevant Coalition and GNFC documents (concept notes, briefings, talking points, etc.).
  7. Actively identify opportunities to leverage the Coalition’s capacities and expertise in support of requests from national convenors and other Food Systems Summit Coalitions.
  8. Actively identify opportunities to leverage the Coalition as a key platform for operationalizing global level commitments around food and hunger, including the SG’s Global Crisis Group, the High-level Panel on Famine Prevention, the OECD-DAC Recommendations on the HDP Nexus, the IASC Task Force on Humanitarian and Development Collaboration and the Joint Steering Committee.
  9. Actively identify events and opportunities for advocacy (and networking) that the Coalition and/or the GNFC can potentially participate in, as well as publications (reports, studies, etc.) that the Coalition and/or the GNFC can contribute to (by inserting paragraphs, chapters, case studies, etc.).
  10. Work closely with the Country Engagement team of the Global Network Against Food Crises to help formulate, engage and leverage the capacity of the Coalition to bring change at country level.
  11. Actively contribute to and support engagement with the FSS Coordination Hub, including through close collaboration with the Global Network’s Technical Support Unit on country support.
  12. Actively contribute to and support the coordination, communication and implementation of the Coalition’s country engagement strategy, in close collaboration with the Global Network against Food Crises, the FSS Coordination Hub, national convenors and Coalition members.
  13. Maintain Coalition membership details, documentation and other relevant resources in the information management space (Microsoft Teams) and the Global Network and Coalition website.
  14. Provide other general support to the GNFC and Coalition as needed

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:

  1. Clear, concise and well drafted Coalition documents.
  2. Effective Coalition organisation, engagement and representation in relevant events and country-led processes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education: Advanced University degree in Political Science, International Development, Social Science, International Relations or Frist University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses

Experience:

  • Have 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience working in a coordination/secretariat role (or similar) is desirable.
  • Experience in drafting concept or briefing notes is desirable.
  • Experience and understanding of government and corporate strategies and priorities and experience in developing multi-stakeholder partnerships is desirable (experience working in advocacy, diplomacy, or public affairs is an advantage).
  • Experience working with WFP is also desirable.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of different types of partnerships at global and country level, with particular emphasis on inter-agency and/or multilateral fora.
  • Knowledge of the humanitarian/ development/peace nexus approach.

Languages: Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) is required. Working knowledge in French or Arabic (proficiency/level C of one and intermediate knowledge/level B of the other is required).
