ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Over the past years, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has responded to an unprecedented level of emergencies, while maintaining ongoing operations. This increased demand stretches the organization which means WFP has to find new approaches and ways of working to ensure we are channelling every available resource to the people we serve.

The Business Innovation and Change Unit (BIU) was established in 2015 to manage change and promote innovation as part of WFP’s Innovation and Knowledge Management division:

  • BIU acts as the “management consulting arm” of WFP
  • BIU is composed of staff with top-tier management consulting backgrounds (e.g. Bain, BCG, McKinsey) as well as UN experience

The Business Innovation and Change Unit (BIU) executes projects on behalf of Executive Directors, Assistant Secretary Generals, and Directors across the UN system, and have become a trusted advisor to WFP and other entities (e.g. UN Women, UNFPA, Business Innovation Group, UNDCO). BIU focus is on end-to-end solutions, including problem assessment, data analysis, operational model design, change plan and implementation monitoring.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

You will be responsible for the full delivery of work streams within Business Innovation and Change projects. Depending on the time of joining and current corporate priorities examples of specific deliverables are:

Divisional and unit key initiatives

  • Support Division Managers on prioritization of key corporate initiatives;
  • Participate in discussions with team members and other divisions to align on objectives, activities, timelines and outputs for the Business Innovation and Change agenda as applicable;
  • Provide analytical and project management support;
  • Support initiative owners in driving implementation forward.

Data management and analysis

  • Facilitate data collection: designing data collection methodology, performing data cleaning/ quality assurance, information processing and analysis. Furthermore, development of new tools to capture data efficiently and support decision making
  • Ensure relevant data are collected and structured in a standardized way;
  • Conduct quality assurance checks on process and data collected to avoid unnecessary data gathering, avoid missing information and ensure consistency of information.
  • Perform complex data analysis and develop insights for senior management

Knowledge management

  • Summarize lesson learned during project for dissemination within the unit
  • Ensure lesson learned are collected and archived in an organised manner to be usable by other team members

Additional support to divisional needs

  • Additional support requests, as required.

Deliverables:

  1. Execution of Business Innovation and Change projects
  2. Overall Innovation and Knowledge Management priorities
  3. Data collection and quality assurance
  4. Perform complex data analysis, define insights and prepare synthesis report for senior management strategic decision making
  5. Other activities

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Advanced University Degree in Business Analytics, Economics, Engineering or other relevant areas; or first university degree with additional relevant experience and/or advanced training/courses.

Experience:

  • 3 years experience in change management or management consulting.

Language:

  • Fluency (level C) in the English language
  • Intermediate knowledge (level B) of another UN official language (Arabic, French, Spanish, Russian or Chinese) or Portuguese (one of WFP's working languages)

MORE ABOUT YOU

You have:

  • Proven skills in project and knowledge management, and engagement in the technical details of data management
  • Good analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative: ability to perform data analysis in excel and produce good quality written materials, including powerpoint presentations as well as text documents;
  • Experience with optimization processes (e.g. optimization of strategic planning, sourcing, logistics, finance processes, performance management, etc.);
  • Collaborative spirit to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels and across different cultures, with credibility and diplomacy;
  • Time management skills with an ability to plan ahead, anticipate requirements, problems and obstacles, and an ability to juggle competing priorities successfully, and to work on tight deadlines;
  • Self-motivated and able to work with a certain degree of autonomy and/ or in team;
  • Fully committed and motivated to achieve the aims of the UN World Food Programme.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Limited Fixed-Term Appointment (LFT) position is a non-mobile staff appointment in the international professional category for a limited period for up to 4 years.

WFP offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, including basic salary, post adjustment, relocation entitlement, travel and shipment allowances, 30 days' annual leave, home leave, an education grant for dependent children, pension plan and medical insurance. The selected candidate will be required to relocate to Rome, Italy to take up this assignment.
