The United Nations World Food Programme is the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.  We are the world’s largest humanitarian organization, saving lives in emergencies and using food assistance to build a pathway to peace, stability, and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters, and the impact of climate change.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DIVISION:

We are currently seeking to fill a Communications and Social Media intern position, to support the work of the Global Office in Canada, based in Ottawa. An internship at WFP is a great opportunity to acquire practical work experience while contributing to the goal of reaching Zero Hunger. Interns at WFP gain profound insight into highly relevant political processes in the United Nations and in government entities. The assignment allows gaining a deep understanding of how humanitarian assistance in emergency contexts is implemented and how it is interconnected with long-term development cooperation. WFP is solely financed through voluntary contributions and the Government of Canada is currently one of the largest government donors. The work of WFP’s Global Office in Canada is critical in sharing messages of appreciation with Canadians.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direct supervision of the External Relations Officer, the candidate will perform the following duties:

  • Monitor and report daily press and media relevant to WFP’s engagement in Canada to WFP
  • Using WFP social media library, select and post social media content in both French and English to WFP Canada’s social media accounts on a daily basis.
  • Monitor and track key social media accounts of interest for engagement on daily basis.
  • Track established key performance indicators for social media engagement on monthly basis for Sr. Leadership decision making to increase WFP Canada’s social media presence.
  • Support the planning process for WFP events in Canada with emphasis on social media engagement at external events and meetings.
  • Translate communication material from English into French as needed.
  • Track and monitor engagement with journalists and media outlets on a weekly basis.
  • Integrate a gender equality lens in social media and draft communication materials
  • Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate programme from a recognized university OR recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) from a recognized university.
  • University course attendance in the past 12 months.
  • Recently graduated (within the past two years) with a Master’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, International Development, or other related fields.
  • Excellent command of both French and English
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Proven eexperience with corporate social media is an asset
  • Proven experience using image software (eg. Canva, Mailchimp, Eventbrite) is an asset.

WORKING LANGUAGES

  • Excellent written and spoken English is required (proficiency/level C).
  • French (minimum B level) is required.

SUPERVISION (Level/Methods of Supervision)

Under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer, the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance, and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be a part of the supervision. The External Relations Officer will provide second-level supervision. With the support of a comprehensive induction package, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

TRAINING COMPONENTS

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn.  Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

LEARNING ELEMENTS

At the end of the assignment, the Intern should:

  • Have a greater understanding of the World Food Programme’s work and its role within the wider humanitarian system.
  • Understand how to contextualize communications materials for Canada, considering Canadian bilingualism and values.

INFORMATION ON THE COUNTRY OF ASSIGNMENT

  • Living conditions in Ottawa, Canada

The security situation in Canada remains stable. There are no specific threats against the UN in Canada. UN staff in Canada are fully integrated into public life. Public health care is provided through the provincial government. Ottawa is well equipped with several hospitals and walk-in clinics for emergency care. Due to fluid COVID-19 situation, this position will be initially based remotely, with the possibility of moving to the physical WFP Office in Ottawa. Access to internet will be required for remote work. The successful candidate will be provided with the necessary support and onboarding material.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.

WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognized institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.

Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply sons, daughters, brothers, or sisters.

Candidates must be legally permitted to work in Canada and have the ability to relocate to Ottawa, Canada for the duration of the internship.
