THE ROLE AND ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The mission of the WFP Japan Relations Office is to raise awareness of WFP’s work amongst the public and partners in Japan – one of the top-ranking and consistent donor countries.
The Japan Relations Office acts as a partnership hub, fostering strategic partnerships with Japanese institutions, liaising with the Government as well as the private sector, including the Japan Association for the World Food Programme (JAWFP), a non-profit entity in support of WFP, and strengthening advocacy to key stakeholders to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 (zero hunger).
In WFP Japan Office, job holders report to the Office Director with functional supervision from the Director of Private Partnerships and Fundraising Division or the designate at Headquarters.
You are expected to work with high degree of independence to carry out your work plan using technical knowledge and experience to analyse data, prepare reports, provide advice and solutions to problems, and identify partnership opportunities. The role is carried out daily in both Japanese and English.
Purpose of the assignment
Drive WFP’s effective positioning with public, private and external partners to attract policy support, resources, technical assistance and innovative solutions to advance the work of WFP, while supporting member states in the achievement of the SDGs and Zero Hunger and emphasizing WFP’s contributions in this regard.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
You will:
- Support the fundraising efforts of Japan Association for the World Food Programme (JAWFP) to improve their effectiveness and ensure their strategy aligns with WFP’s private sector fundraising strategy.
- Pursue JAWFP’s individual giving activities by providing technical and strategic guidance in coordination with Headquarters (HQ); Expedite the transfer of individual fundraising learnings and knowledge from JAWFP to other WFP markets.
- Provide normative guidance to JAWFP and other partners on due diligence process, all compliance issues (use of WFP marks, images, non-endorsement clause) and adherence to the private sector architecture in coordination with HQ.
- Keep abreast of social, economic, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) trends affecting the corporate world in Japan, synthesize and interpret data to adapt plans and proposals accordingly.
- Lead the implementation of a work plan for an assigned area by delivering activities that maintain and develop private sector partnerships to raise funds in support of WFP strategic objectives.
- Proactively support a wide range of aspects of a partnerships portfolio, including partner profiling, data/trends analysis and outreach plan, to maximize resources and leverage policy and technical support for WFP’s work.
- Facilitate corporate dialogue with partners through preparation of quality briefing materials; Proactively highlight strategic opportunities and issues to senior management and propose options for the best course of action to nurture trust and interest in the work of WFP.
- Gather and share partner intelligence (including forecasting), using key information systems (e.g. WINGS, Salesforce, and WFPGo), and assess results.
- Support functional units, RBx and COs on partnership strategies (including the development of Partnership Action Plans); Extend support on partnership/contribution management, in line with corporate norms, processes and legal agreements, on quality proposal and report writing by engaging with other WFP entities and external stakeholders.
- Facilitate partnership growth, by exploring opportunities to expand existing partnerships and scope of new partners, guided by assessments, analysis and due diligence; Present recommendations to senior management and ensure follow-up.
- Contribute to the preparation of partnership proposals, strategic agreements, joint strategies and/or MOU, taking into account corporate norms, processes and external regulations; Ensure quality control of content by engaging with relevant functional units, RBx and COs.
- Manage staff, providing coaching, training and guidance to ensure appropriate development and enable high performance.
- Take responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives in all areas of work to ensure equal participation of women and men.
- Contribute to preparedness actions, providing technical recommendations and guidance; Monitor defined risks and make recommendations how to manage these effectively.

QUALIFICATIONS AND KEY REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
You have:
- Advanced University degree in Political Science, International Development, Development Economics, International Relations, Law, Marketing, Communications or other relevant field, or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.
EXPERIENCE:
You have:
- Minimum five or more years of relevant professional work experience in partnership roles, mainly in the areas of private sector fundraising and partnerships.
- In-depth knowledge of private sector fundraising market in Japan, gained through either direct work in the private sector or partnership management, preferably at international NGOs or UN agencies.
LANGUAGE:
You have:
- International Professional: Fluency (level C) in English and Japanese language.
- Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language: Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, and/or Portuguese (A WFP’s working language)

- designed and managed all resource mobilization processes and resource strategies, negotiated contract terms and provided resourcing advice to seniors.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Mobility is and continues to be, a core contractual requirement in WFP. The selected candidate will be employed on a fixed term as well as a rotational contract with a probationary period of one year.
