BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
The Global Network against Food Crises was launched at the 2016 World Humanitarian Summit by the European Union, FAO and WFP with the objective of tackling the root causes of food crises and promoting sustainable solutions through shared analysis and knowledge and strengthened coordination in evidence-based responses. One of the foundational principles of the Network is that responses in food crises need to address immediate humanitarian needs, link the short-term interventions with a medium to long-term vision, and invest in targeted development assistance to reduce needs, risks and vulnerability as well as in early preparedness and anticipatory actions.
The Network operates at national, regional and global level along three interlinked dimensions (3×3 approach):
- Understanding food crises – Generating evidence-based information and analysis.
- Strategic Investment in food and nutrition security – Leveraging strategic investments to prepare, prevent and respond to food crises.
- Going beyond food – Fostering political uptake and functional coordination across clusters/sectors to address other dimensions driving the food security crisis scenarios.
The vision of the Global Network Against Food Crises is to prepare and respond to food crises and support the collective outcome related to Ending Hunger (SDG 2); reducing needs, risks and vulnerabilities associated with acute hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture and food systems.
The overall strategic guidance of the Global Network is entrusted to a Senior Steering Group – the decision-making body of the Global Network providing strategic and policy guidance. The operational body of the Senior Steering Group is the Global Network Technical Support Unit designed to support country and regionally-led initiatives.
A consultant is needed to support the development, creation and population of country specific pages, and further development of the Global Network Against Food Crises website.
ROLE OF THE CONSULTANT:
- Under the overall supervision of the Global Network’s Senior Advisor for Communications and Advocacy, the consultant will work closely with the Global Network’s web programmer and graphic designer to support the development and population of the Global Network’s website, www.fightfoodcrises.net;
- Evaluate the Global Network’s website against needs for data, analysis and coordination with and from the SG’s Global Crisis Group, the G7 Global Alliance, and Global Network partners at global, regional and country level;
- Provide strategic advice to effectively situate the website as a key platform in support of these demands, including structure, contents and related sources;
- In collaboration with the Global Network’s communications focal point, graphic designer and web programmer, design, develop and implement new country and solutions-focused pages;
- Advise the leadership of the Global Network on opportunities to strengthen digital communications, marketing and advocacy opportunities and oversee social media engagement and strategy development;
- Identify content opportunities, populate, write and proofread;
- Based on website traffic monitoring and analysis, advice and capitalise on opportunities to strengthen user engagement with the site;
- Develop and enforce metadata, such as descriptions and keywords to aid in site indexing and improved searchability;
- Develop and manage an editorial calendar to ensure timely content during the assignment;
- Provide feedback to the redesign and functionalities’ proposal of the new website.

- Develop RFP for sourcing web design and development service contracts
- Managing the redesign process and information management in collaboration with colleagues from FAO.
- Collaborating with colleagues from social media, digital production, and web development, and cross-sector with other WFP departments and UN organisations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
- Advanced university degree in relevant field, such as international development, international relations, humanitarian assistance, food security, political science.
Experience:
- More than 8 years’ experience of communications, marketing, digital strategy, website development and content creation.
- More than 5 years of relevant experience in the humanitarian and/or development sector, ideally with previous experience with the World Food Programme, other UN organisations and member states at both global and national levels.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Significant knowledge and understanding of the UN system, food security/systems, humanitarian/development, and related subject matter.
- Ability to work with diverse audiences and teams, across multilateral organisations.
- Ability to effectively manage competing priorities, to plan work accordingly and to deliver products on time.
Languages:
English as core requirement.
