ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
The complex emergency in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, continues to deteriorate, leaving an estimated 1.5 million people in need of lifesaving and life-sustaining humanitarian assistance and protection in 2023. By June 2022, more than 945,000 people were estimated to be internally displaced in Mozambique due to the conflict in Cabo Delgado, mostly in Cabo Delgado. Still, approximately 74,000 in Nampula, 2,000 in Niassa, and 1000 in Zambezia. More than one million people in Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula are estimated to be experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above) according to the latest Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) analysis conducted before the cyclone season and the beginning of the war in Ukraine. The updated number is likely much higher.
The results of the National Household Budget Survey (IOF, 2019-2020)8 indicate a stunting prevalence in Cabo Delgado of 45 percent. Zambezia (45 percent) and Niassa (4 percent) remain the provinces with the second-highest rates of chronic malnutrition in the country, after Nampula with 47 percent, compared to the national average of 38 percent, and is considered very high as per the public health classification.
